AFIDEP’s analysis shows that Malawi increased it’s health sector allocation from 8.8% of the national budget in 2023/24 to 12% in 2024/25 — a major milestone toward universal health coverage.

Yet, only ~24% of that increase came from domestic resources. Donor funding still drives the sector, leaving long-term sustainability uncertain. AFIDEP continues to work with government and partners to design evidence-informed domestic financing mechanisms — ensuring African countries allocate not just more, but smarter.
