The UDF government's free bus travel scheme for women in KSRTC buses is unlikely to benefit the majority of women in the state. The government has restricted the much-publicized election promise to ordinary buses alone.
There are fewer than 1,000 ordinary KSRTC buses operating across the state. If City Fast, inter-district, and Limited Stop services are excluded, the number of eligible buses becomes even smaller. The government's plan is to implement the free travel scheme only on these ordinary buses. About one-third of these services operate in the districts of Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam. In the northern districts, there are fewer than 200 ordinary buses, and this number drops further after excluding City Fast, inter-district, and Limited Stop services.
According to 2025 data, KSRTC operates only 4,609 of Kerala's 16,545 bus routes. Of the approximately 4,500 KSRTC buses currently in service, nearly one-third are concentrated in the capital district. Around one-third of the buses in operation are Super Fast or other Super Class services. Standing passengers are not permitted on Super Class buses, making the implementation of free travel difficult. The scheme is also impractical on buses with reserved seating. In addition, the nearly 500 buses operating under the SWIFT service are also unlikely to be covered by the free travel scheme.

The fact is that the Kerala Government, under the leadership of Pinarayi Vijayan, has consistently reduced Kerala's total outstanding liabilities as a percentage of GSDP over the last five years.
Interestingly, the INC-led Karnataka Government's total outstanding liabilities as a percentage of GSDP have consistently increased over the last three years due to FREEBIES.👇🏻

It is not the Women’s Reservation Bill that has been defeated, as being claimed by Govt and Godhi media. The proposal to reserve 33% of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies was passed in 2023. What has been defeated today is the BJP government’s attempt to use delimitation as a tool to undermine India’s democracy and federal structure.
Despite assurances from the PM and the HM that southern states would not lose out in the delimitation exercise, no concrete provisions were included in the bill to back up their claims.
The Govt unilaterally convened special sittings of Parliament in the middle of state elections, apparently hoping to divide the opposition while shielding itself behind the women’s reservation issue. Their real intention was to to increase the strength of the Lok Sabha from 543 to around 850 seats and carry out large-scale gerrymandering of constituencies — similar to what was done in J&K and Assam.
We challenge the government: If it is genuine about the empowerment of women, then bring forward an amendment tomorrow ( session is there tomorrow also )to implement one-third reservation for women with immediate effect ( instead waiting for the new census to complete and thereafter Delimitation process) based on the current strength of the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies. We will fully cooperate in passing it…
