Got this question in the DM's about "oneshotting" in psychedelics. I get asked it a lot.

It's probably the #1 fear keeping people from trying it.

Who *wouldn't* be afraid of getting permanently rewired during a trip?

Here's my answer:

First off, it's extremely rare to have lasting *negative* psychological events. It's less than 1% in the studies I've researched. There's also a ton of subjectivity here, what one person views as a negative experience is another's 'doing the work'.

Second, the one-shotting is more associated with large doses of ayahuasca and harsher hallucinogens than we do at our retreats.

We have two options generally: mushrooms/psilocybin, or Unity which is a microdose of several different hallucinogens. You're doing a relatively low dose in both cases, there's just not enough in there to freak you out for life, to be blunt.

The Unity is the most gentle psychedelic experience I have ever had. No harsh, agitated "liftoff" that some medicines are known for, the come down is as soft and comfortable as any I've ever had. And the trip itself is probably one of the most beautiful experiences of my life.

Third, the set and setting are actually just as important as the dose. Hoot (our facilitator/shaman) creates a container that is so gentle, peaceful, uplifting, positive, that everyone's (so far) takeaway is lifechanging in a positive direction. That's the real magic to his ceremony, the dosage and medicine is just one part of it.

The settings I've heard about one-shotting tend to be large groups (as many as 50 trippers) with relatively few facilitators (I've read the ratio is 20:1 in some places). This is a recipe for disaster and you can see how this environment (a bunch of wigged out trippers running around and not enough facilitators to help them) could have a damaging effect.

Our events are 5:1 and often less. Many providers are doing 1:1. This is a far better set up.

Finally, I'd like to see some of the infamous "oneshotters" a year or so after their trip. The stories you hear of people coming home and upending their lives, many of those turned out for the better, I'm guessing.

Quitting your job, selling your business, ending a toxic marriage, changing your life - that's exactly what some people need and want.

More importantly, those seeds usually were sown long before they took the dose. The medicine revealed the truth - it didn't insert it.

For 99% of psychedelics users the #1 outcome is CLARITY. They see their lives, their past, their spirituality with clear eyes for the first time.
