Before the mid-1800s, it is estimated that the grasslands of North America were home to 30-60 million bison, 10 million elk, 40 million white-tailed deer, 10 million mule deer, and a combined total of 100 million caribou and pronghorn.
Despite this vast number of herbivores, methane emissions were only about 80% of those from the current population of herbivores (which includes both livestock and wildlife), even though today's populations are significantly smaller than those of the mid-1800s.
This suggests that methane emissions do not decrease proportionally with the number of herbivores. Instead, they are the result of specific agricultural practices rather than the sheer number of animals.
