Having handed over the Boma Ground of Hoima and King George Stadium of Masindi to the UPDF Engineering Brigade a couple of days earlier, the National Coucil of Sports (NCS) has today followed suit with Pece Stadium, Gulu University and Lira University grounds.
All three ceremonies were once again presidied over by the Minister of State for Education and Sports in charge of Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, flanked by the NCS Board Chairperson Ambrose Tashobya and General Secretary Dr Bernard Patrick Ogwel.
The trio underlined government's commitment to countrywide sports infrastructure development and to the success the Pamoja AFCON 2027, reiterated the importance of that infrastructure in the Acholi and Lango sub regions naturally endowed with people of great athletic qualities, called on the private sector in the country to also seize the opportunity and pull it's weight ahead of all the major international sports events coming to these facilities, and urged consultants Ministry of Works and Transport and contractors UPDF to do everything possible to meet the six-month project timelines.
These committments and calls were made in the presence of political heads including Hon. Martin Ojara Mapenduzi (MP Bardege-Layibi County), District and City political and administrative leaderships, the university hierarchies in Gulu and Lira led by the representatives of the Vice Chancellors, NCS top management, the Ministry of Works team led by Eng. Henry Lubega, the contractor's team led by Lt. Col. Peter Seku Kidemuka, area locals, and media.
The training grounds in Gulu and Lira are attached to the Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium, for which the construction has made major strides in the last few months.

Parliament has applauded the National Council of Sports (NCS) for - among several other achievements - the recurring excellent performances of Ugandan athletes in different sporting disciplines, on the global stage.
These performances and other achievements were captured in the Ministerial Policy Statement for the Financial Year 2026-27, which NCS presented to the Committee on Education and Sports at Parliament earlier today.
Chairing the Committee session, Hon. James Kubeketerya led the applause and encouraged his members to join in, following the NCS preamble from Board Chairperson Ambrose Tashobya and the main presentation from General Secretary Dr Bernard Patrick Ogwel.
The said excelling athletes perform under the federations and associations funded and supervised by NCS, in international competitions also largely bankrolled by government.
Members of the Committee, including Hon. Connie Nakayenze,, Hon. Geoffrey Kayemba 'Solo' and Hon. Nathan Itungo, all supported the submitted requests for increased funding for several listed activites, among them:

. Support of National Sports Federations/Associations.

. Facilitation of national teams for International Tournaments and Major Games.

. Support of some non-football clubs for continental championships.

. Revitalising of District Sports Councils.

. Distribution of sports kit/equipment in districts.

. Subvention to NADO
. Reward and Recognition Scheme for talented and excelling athletes.

. AFCON 2027 related activities.

. Enhancement of domestic leagues.

. Construction and maintenance of sports facilities.

Rally History

History has been made at the world-famous Safari Rally in Kenya, a World Rally Championship (WRC) event, as Oscar Ntambi and Uthimaan Muhamadi won their category. The Uganda crew won the ARC2 category on Sunday, in a rally that claimed so many top drivers it was unanimously described as brutal. The Ugandan pair, backed by Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), finished 22nd overall in the WRC rankings, in a truly heroic showing in Naivasha.
