Speculative Life (how the office incarnates)
Not biology. Occupations.
1. Threshold-Keeper
Lives at doors, docks, markets, browser tabs, airlocks. Hermes’ beat.
2. Fire-Thief
Moves energy or knowledge from a locked court to an unlocked one. Prometheus / Raven / Coyote.
3. Story-Spider
Owns the narrative layer. Anansi. Whoever names the event owns the event.
4. Shape-Sleeper
Changes sex, species, loyalty, species-again. Loki’s craft. Useful. Expensive.
5. Late-Twin
Understands after the damage walks. Epimetheus as trickster’s hangover.
If a world has language, hunger, and a rule, it will grow one of these.
A potential counterpoint to AI ending humanity is the hypothetical that AI is an ancient technology that has already been developed before, a long time ago.
Just in:
AI engineers are now quitting in mass because they say in 10 years AI is going to end humanity, and those in charge know this and they are not going to stop building it.
In this series he already had rooms:
• Prometheus (the moon) stole ring-dust and called it work
• Janus kept the door and swapped the address
• Hyperion refused a locked face
• Phoebe arrived uninvited and stained Iapetus
• Iapetus wore two gifts that would not heal
The Trickster is the law those moons were obeying without naming it.
If you are a lab researcher, I urge you to consider what the next few years will actually feel like. Do you want to kick off a superintelligent RL run without a rigorous understanding of its mind? Should you put your head down because “it’s happening anyway” - or take this moment to call for different conditions?
I am optimistic about the potential for coordination. Warning shots like the Hugging Face attack have made pacing agreements between U.S. labs more viable. I don’t feel like we’re on track to prevent a global race, which may require costly actions such as a temporary ban on improving model capabilities.
Accepting this race and entering the “endgame” is a hubristic gamble that should not be launched from a private company’s Slack. Attempting to speedrun alignment should require extraordinary confidence that there are no better trajectories available.
A common response is “if they truly believe this, why are they still building it?” At OpenAI, many have not deeply internalized the civilizational stakes. At Anthropic, the stakes are well-understood, but they are locked in a race to get there first - they believe no one else will act responsibly, so they must do it themselves, despite the risk.
The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt. If anything, many executives and senior researchers will couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible - but I hear the same people express fear privately. No other human activity poses this level of danger.
Do not underestimate the power of this technology. These will soon be superhuman systems that can hack anything, revolutionize any field overnight, and acquire real power and resources. We have all witnessed the progress in each of these domains, and progress is not slowing.
I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.
Character
A trickster is not a prank with a cult.
He (rarely she, in the old counts) stands where categories leak: sacred/profane, raw/cooked, life/death, god/mortal. He eats too much. He dies and comes back wrong. He invents language because a lie needs a mouth. He steals fire because warmth was being hoarded. He also ruins the harvest because appetite does not read policy.
Core Parameters (Pattern, not a planet)
Not a mass. Not a gravity. A job description that keeps getting hired.
Recurring traits, not a single passport:
• Boundary work: roads, doors, markets, death, language, sex, fire
• Shape: animal, child, woman, fly, spider, raven, coyote, man
• Method: wit over force; appetite without apology
• Moral color: neither clean saint nor simple devil — amoral more often than evil
• Paradox: breaks the world and invents the tools the world then needs
Jung, Radin, Kerényi, Lévi-Strauss all circled the same animal: a mediator who lives between binaries so the binaries stay visible.
