This whole influx of 'influencer marketing' in tennis is not going to end well.
Giving hundreds of content creators, many of whom have little to no genuine interest in the sport, free, high-level access simply to attract a new audience is a cheap and lazy way of trying to grow tennis.
Most of these creators are not there because they care about tennis. They are there because it benefits them: free experiences, exclusive access, money and content opportunities. The moment the invitations stop, so does their interest in the sport.
You can already see it during matches. Some of them appear far more interested in filming content, checking their phones and posting on social media than actually watching the tennis happening directly in front of them.
In all likelihood, most of their audiences will not suddenly become tennis fans anyway, which is a good thing.
But the bigger concern is what happens if this strategy actually works.
If tennis builds a significant new audience through influencer-driven marketing, there will inevitably be pressure to change the sport further in order to attract and retain that audience.
We have already seen something similar happen with Formula 1 following the success of Drive to Survive. It brought in a huge new fanbase and grew the sport, but ultimately many think the changes the sport has made due to this has been for the worse.
As someone who has followed tennis for more than 20 years, having started watching before I was even a teenager, it is genuinely disappointing to see the sport heading in this direction.

That is an interesting question only if you assume that Mozart is the unit by which civilisation produces music.

Mozart was undeniably a musical genius, one of the most extraordinary individual composers in the Western canon, emerging from a particular European classical tradition. But he did not create a gharana, a lineage, or a self-sustaining philosophy of musical transmission. Indian civilisation, by contrast, has long cultivated an approach to knowledge and aesthetics that emphasises depth, nuance, and layered understanding rather than isolated comparison.
So why on earth would we aspire to produce a clone, albeit that of a genius, of an insipid culture when we have our own extraordinary tradition of classical music?
Indian classical music is not a collection of famous names waiting to be put into a Western ranking table. It is a lineage.
The Nāṭyaśāstra discusses sophisticated music and performance theory, reflecting a highly developed musical culture in ancient India.
And then came the astonishing flowering of living traditions.
In Hindustani music alone you have Gwalior, Agra, Jaipur-Atrauli, Kirana, Patiala, Rampur-Sahaswan, Delhi, Mewati, Indore, Benaras, Sham Chaurasi and Bhendi Bazaar, among others.
These aren't merely labels.
They are schools of thought.
Distinct approaches to raga development, voice production, ornamentation, rhythm, improvisation, repertoire and pedagogy, transmitted from guru to shishya and continually refined by successive generations.
The Gwalior tradition.
The intricate architecture of Jaipur-Atrauli.
The swara-consciousness of Kirana.
The rhythmic and vocal character of Agra.
The virtuosity of Patiala.
The intellectual complexity of Bhendi Bazaar.
And that's just Hindustani khayal.
Then you have the enormous Carnatic tradition with its own schools, bani-s, composers, lineages and extraordinarily sophisticated systems of raga and tala.
So when someone asks, “How many Mozarts have come out of 1.4 billion Indians?”, my response is:
Why are you counting Mozarts when we have lineages?
A Mozart is one extraordinary individual.
A musical lineage is an extraordinary civilisation teaching itself how to listen, think, remember, improvise and create.
And this is personal for me.
My Chote Nana was one of the pillars of the Bhendi Bazaar Gharana, one of Mumbai's great contributions to Hindustani classical music.
The gharana itself emerged in Bombay in the late 19th century through Chhajju Khan, Nazir Khan and Khadim Hussain Khan, and went on to influence musicians across generations. Its distinctive emphasis on clear intonation, breath control, aakaar, sargam, rhythmic permutations and the Merukhand tradition produced a lineage that reached far beyond the lanes of Bhendi Bazaar.
That is the difference.
You ask India, “Where is your Mozart?”
I ask you:

The baby is only part of the birth. There's another birth that almost nobody talks about. The PLACENTA. For 9 months, your body grows an entirely new organ, an organ with one job keeping your baby alive. It delivers oxygen, nutrients, hormones, filters waste and connects two completely different circulatory systems without ever mixing your blood. In the summer of 1980, a distraught 7th grade boy stood in the courtyard of a modest house in Mylapore, watching his father toss his cricket bat down a deep well. A fast bouncer had shattered the boy's spectacles during a local match & his father, a renowned Sanskrit logician, was terrified for his son's sight.
"Your cricket days are done," his father declared, handing him a violin. "If you want to master precision, master this."
The boy did not throw a tantrum. He directed his focus toward the strings, training until he was performing alongside musical legends, even taking direct corrections from Bharat Ratna M.S. Subbulakshmi.
5 yrs later, he suffered another blow: he failed to clear the IIT-JEE examination.
He did not give up. He enrolled in a regional engineering college, quietly mastering computer science logic gates. He eventually worked his way into IIT Madras as a postgrad researcher, earned a PhD, joined as a prof & eventually became the Director of the very institute that had once turned him away.
By 2011, while the world was building consumer mobile apps, this prof was looking at a hidden national vulnerability: every radar, fighter jet, banking server & defense system in India was running on foreign-designed microprocessors.
He had a single question in his mind: "We can test that a foreign chip does what we WANT it to do. But can we guarantee it does not do something we DO NOT want it to do when a war starts?"
He proposed building a completely indigenous, industrial-grade microprocessor from scratch. Global tech giants insisted it could not be done w/o billions of dollars in infrastructure & massive foreign patents.
He did not care. Working out of cramped labs on long shifts, he & his team adopted the open source RISC-V instruction set. They hand-coded logic gates, mapped silicon layouts & verified billions of instruction cycles.
In July 2018, a tiny 16mm² piece of silicon codenamed Risecreek arrived back at the lab. The team wired it up, flipped the switch & watched a flickering monitor as the Linux operating system booted on 100% Indian-designed silicon for the 1st time in history.
Today, his SHAKTI processor architecture powers everything from defense communications to space grade controllers built in collaboration with ISRO.

Mesopotamia was never the cradle of civilisation. India was.
I spent forty years in international shipping, not academia. When I began researching the history of maritime trade, I had no orthodoxy to defend. I followed the evidence, and it kept arriving in the same place: the Indian subcontinent.
Nineteenth century archaeologists dug in Mesopotamia because the climate preserved artefacts, the biblical sources pointed them there, and the Ottomans allowed the excavations. That is the entire basis for the myth of Mesopotamia as "the cradle of civilisation."
Nobody applied the same rigour to India. Mohenjo-daro was not discovered until 1922. By then the narrative had already hardened.
What was actually there was the largest civilisation of the ancient world. Three hundred cities. Fifty thousand people in each, by 2600 BC. Two thirds of them stood on the banks of the Sarasvati, the central and greatest of the seven rivers described in the Rig Veda, flowing down from the Himalayas before the river vanished entirely by 1900 BC. The Vedic kings claimed territory stretching "sea to sea," from Afghanistan to Maharashtra, some 1.5 million square miles, against Egypt's 13,000. A dock at Lothal built to handle thirty ships of sixty tons, unmatched in Europe for four thousand years. When it was first excavated, it was recorded as a bathing pool.
When the scale became impossible to dismiss, the theory was not corrected. It was replaced with a story of pale-skinned nomads from the steppe who supposedly arrived around 1500 BC and brought civilisation with them. There is no evidence. The chronology doesn't work. The Vedas describe no invasion.
In 2019 a Harvard-led genetic study revived the claim, and the press reported it as confirmation. It was not. The same study found the builders of these cities were indigenous. The Sarasvati river that the Rig Veda described had already dried up before these newcomers arrived. What the study also found is that a small group of men, arriving after the Sarasvati had already dried up, interbred with the existing population and left a genetic signature. That is all.
So, where they chose to dig was mostly an accident of climate and access. The Aryan invasion theory was constructed because an Indian civilisation that owed nothing to Caucasians was a fact the late nineteenth century could not accommodate.

A $5 million Indian startup just patented the motor every global automaker has been failing to build for a decade.
Bengaluru based Vimag Labs has been granted its fifth Indian patent for something called a Virtual Magnet Synchronous Motor, or VMSM.
It runs an electric motor without any rare earth magnet inside it.
Almost every EV today uses a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor. These have fixed rare earth magnets physically built into the rotor.
Vimag's motor does not. It creates and controls the magnetic field using software, power electronics, and control algorithms in real time.
The supply chain problem it solves is enormous.
• China controls about 91% of global rare earth refining and separation.
• China produces 94% of the world's sintered permanent magnets, the exact type used in EV motors.
• China holds only 35% of global rare earth reserves. Its power comes from processing, not from owning the minerals.
China has been using that control as a weapon.
• In April 2025, China imposed export controls on seven heavy rare earth elements and all related magnets. Exports collapsed and carmakers in the US and Europe were forced to cut production.
• In October 2025, China extended the rules to any foreign-made product containing 0.1% or more Chinese rare earth content, even if made entirely outside China.
• Prices outside China have spiked up to sixfold. EV makers report roughly $500 in added material cost per vehicle.
• Licensing approvals for European firms have fallen below 25% in some sectors.
Every major automaker has been trying to escape this.
Tesla switched to rare earth motors in 2017 and has said its next generation motors in 2026 will go rare earth free again. Stellantis and GM are funding Niron Magnetics, a US startup building iron nitrogen magnets.
Neither has said when it reaches production.
Valeo has been working on a rare earth free motor since 2022. And It is not expected to reach the market until 2028 at the earliest. Honda has announced its own funding into alternatives.
Vimag has already run 87,600 engineering hours on this, has active pilots with two wheeler and passenger car manufacturers, signed a manufacturing agreement with Jendamark, and is scaling toward commercial vehicles and industrial systems from 200 kW to 600 kW.
It is also building versions for robotics, defence, and cooling systems.
Now the part worth being careful about.
This is still a $5 million Series A company running pilots, not mass production. Motors that work in a lab or a pilot fleet do not always survive cost, durability, and efficiency testing at scale.
Software defined magnetic fields require heavy power electronics, and that adds its own cost and failure points. Valeo has been at this for four years and is still two years from market.
Analysts estimate the West would need 15 to 30 years to rebuild an independent rare earth supply chain.
Building a motor that does not need rare earths at all skips that entire problem.
A college economics professor stated that he had once failed an entire class. That class insisted that socialism is functional and that no one should be poor and no one rich, that everyone is equal...
