When you first experience your toddler melting down because you gave them the green bowl instead of the blue one, or you put the ketchup in the wrong spot on the plate, or you zipped up their jacket when they wanted to do it themselves, it seems completely ridiculous. I know it did for me.
But once I understood why it happens, it became a lot easier to stay calm and even laugh it off.
Their prefrontal cortex is still years away from being developed. This means emotional regulation and impulse control is not there. When something does not match the expectation they had in their head, they literally do not have the circuitry to emotionally adjust. The emotion floods in and they have almost no ability to regulate it.
They are not being manipulative or dramatic. They literally cannot do what you are asking them to do when you say "calm down"
This is why staying calm as the parent matters so much. You are their external regulator until their internal one comes online. When you stay calm, your nervous system actually helps regulate theirs.
If you work closely with software engineers, and you’ve not written code yourself, but you’d like to understand your programmer colleagues better…
I would highly encourage you to signup for a platform like say @Replit where you can build web apps with just English language instructions.
Come up with an idea that you’ve always wished someone built an app for, and ask the Replit agent to build it.
You don’t have to know how to code, you can just use English instructions to build it.
But what you’ll learn through this, is the *process* of building software.
You’ll see how fast it is to build a new greenfield project. And then once you have it up and running, and you want to add a new feature, you’ll then learn the pain of maintaining existing features and dependencies, while building a new one on top.
You’ll be able to understand why building software always ends up taking longer than you expect because of regressions and subtle bugs that get introduced inevitably.
Understanding this process will be invaluable for you to collaborate better with software engineers.
Again, you don’t have to know or learn how to code. Thanks to vibe coding platforms, you’ll understand the building process, without knowing how to code.
I’m grateful that these platforms exist if only for helping everyone enjoy the joy of building software, and also experience the pain of maintaining it.
Seriously, go do it now!
@tom_doerr@TaskbearAi I think he’s talking about the obsidian community ratings when searching for community plug-ins, but then the definition of “curated” would not make much sense…
This is incredible. @OfficialMLBShop is selling caps with every team's logo on top of the team's written logo, creating some funny names: https://t.co/DIpcJh2PlM
I still cannot believe that I can:
- look at a world map and tap anywhere to zoom in at street level
- instantly access any song, book, movie, tv show, or podcast ever made
- have any conceivable question and get an immediate answer or video explanation
- take a photo or video wherever I am and add it to my massive, searchable, always accessible personal archive
- video call anyone in my life, at anytime, no matter where they are
- watch live sports on a little wireless glass rectangle
- type out these thoughts and have them read by thousands of people, all over the world, a few seconds later
I just finished a new essay about the origins of wokeness. I'm going to get flak from both the far right and the far left about it, so to save all our time I'll respond in advance to what I know they'll say.

This thread of Robin Williams will put a smile on your face 🧵
1. Robin Williams visited paralyzed Christopher Reeves, disguised as an accented doctor, and humorously threatened a rectal exam, making Reeves laugh for the first time after his accident.
