How Childhood Trauma Alters Brain Pathways
Novel insights have been revealed about the impact of childhood trauma on brain development.
Utilizing artificial intelligence to analyze brain scans from over 580 children, the research uncovers how trauma disrupts neural networks related to self-reflection and problem-solving abilities.
These disruptions indicate that children who have faced abuse may encounter challenges with emotional regulation, empathy, and physical self-awareness, alongside academic difficulties in areas such as memory and decision-making.
Highlighting a critical gap in current treatment methods, which largely focus on managing trauma-related fear and avoidance, the study advocates for therapeutic strategies that also address the altered processing of bodily sensations and the broader cognitive and emotional consequences of trauma.
This approach aims to foster a comprehensive healing process, enhancing the sense of self and improving interpersonal connections.

Brains of Bullied Teens Show Chemical Shifts Linked to Psychosis
Researchers discovered a troubling connection between peer bullying in adolescents and the onset of psychotic episodes, which is linked to alterations in brain chemistry, specifically reduced levels of the neurotransmitter glutamate in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC).
This area of the brain is vital for managing emotions, making decisions, and controlling cognitive functions.
By employing magnetic resonance spectroscopy to analyze the ACC region's glutamate levels in Japanese adolescents, the study found that those subjected to bullying exhibit signs of early psychosis and a notable decrease in glutamate.
These findings not only shed light on the neurological impact of bullying but also suggest that interventions targeting glutamate levels could be a promising avenue for preventing psychosis.
Additionally, the research emphasizes the importance of anti-bullying programs and mental health support for adolescents, pointing to a multifaceted approach that includes both pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies to address the repercussions of bullying and safeguard young minds.

Today is the end of the month. While I am changing my work habits to respond properly to my physician's request ("work as much as like a normal person, not YOUR normal"), there are a number of practices I've sustained I hope to continue, and they might be of use to you all.
