@nguyenhdi Isn't this true of the recent adaptation as well? I walked out about midway into the film, but at least the first half was rather tame, which is certainly not what I remember about the book.
@VerminusM Question: in my culture (I'm a diaspora Jew, so think Western value system) a man calling himself a hero is more or less immediately disqualifying. Like even Trump wouldn't brag like that, I don't think. Is it more normal here in the Levant or is it also a huge faux pas?
@SophiaTupolev I'd argue that showing up *here* actually shows that they do have skin in the game. Flights are pricier than usual and anyway it's a noticeable expense. In most Western countries things are getting worse for us. I like the filter of needing to be here better than absentee voting.
@orthonormalist there's an old Soviet joke about this: – Your ethnicity? – Yes. In other words, if you feel the need to ask what a person's ethnicity is, they're Jewish. I only know one exception: Tim Roth isn't!
@johnxinos@Bkclaims This! My Michelin experience is mostly limited to the Baltics, and there at least the Bib Gourmand restaurants are unfailingly great, with amazing food, more or less reasonable prices, and none of the faux fanciness.
@nguyenhdi yes, this all generally shows the wisdom of the hard times -> hard men -> good times -> soft men -> hard times meme. In the recent decades, soft means "doesn't understand communism is bad," among other things...
@dissproportion Of course, I was being flippant. I would say, though, that the pop psych result do not actually replicate. Like boring studies on prevalence of smth in some populations do, or the IQ stuff, maybe, but not the power poses/priming BS.
@SandyofCthulhu Such a lovely question! I was hit by a car when I was 14. No broken bones, lots of bruising and a scare (thank God for practicing rolls!). I'm sure I would have survived 5x the damage, but died to 20x the damage, so for a lvl 1 Commoner it was around 1/8 my HP. Fits the bill!
@AdamPollock No it isn't, but even very, very good poets have weaker poems as well. It's more on the people doing selection in this case, I think – I'm sure she should have better options (admittedly, it's not like I know her poetry well, but I hope I'm not wrong on this).
@codytfenwick Also, the illusion of my consciousness is due to the high efficiency of the human brain. If you ran my brain on snail ganglia, it would take a building or two and wouldn't seem so magical. I still don't think LLMs are conscious, but this stuff is neither here nor there.
@VerminusM It was never a genocide, so it cannot stop being a genocide, so it's still ongoing. Kind of like I've never stopped drinking brandy every morning...
