We are pleased to present the Akagera second quarter Newsletter for April–June 2026.
This quarter marked the transition from the wet to the dry season, with strong progress in fire management, including the clearing of over 52 km of firebreaks. Wildlife highlights included the birth of three rhino calves, while commercial revenue exceeded US$1 million, representing a 4% increase over the same period in 2025. Community outreach also remained active, reaching over 31,000 people while community enterprise supported by the park generated nearly half a million dollars in benefits for neighbouring communities. Prescribed burns and firebreak maintenance remain important tools for managing Akagera’s savannah landscape. During this dry period, 52 firebreaks were maintained or established, and 8,376.99 hectares were strategically burned to reduce fire risk, contain uncontrolled fires, lower dry fuel loads, and promote fresh grass and vegetation regeneration for wildlife.

✈️ A new route takes flight!

Rwanda Airports Company proudly welcomed the inaugural SalamAir flight from Muscat to Kigali, marking the launch of a new direct link between the Sultanate of Oman 🇴🇲 and the Republic of Rwanda 🇷🇼.

The inaugural flight was received at Kigali International Airport with a traditional water salute, in the presence of officials from the Government of Rwanda and representatives of the Rwandan aviation sector, together with a high-level delegation from the Sultanate of Oman.

This milestone strengthens connectivity between our two nations and opens new opportunities for tourism, trade, and investment.

July 16th marks World Snake Day, a moment to celebrate the remarkable snake diversity found in Akagera National Park. Home to more than 30 species, including the endemic Akagera gracile blind snake (Letheobia akagerae), Akagera’s varied habitats support snakes with fascinating life histories, from rock pythons along wetlands to arboreal species in riverine forests. Whether venomous or harmless, diurnal or nocturnal, each species plays an important role in maintaining a healthy and balanced ecosystem.
Snakes are often feared and misunderstood, but awareness is helping to change perceptions around the park. Through education, community engagement, and safe response efforts, Akagera is promoting coexistence while protecting these important reptiles. The bi-monthly elephant survey was completed, resulting in the addition of six new individuals to the database. Akagera now has 115 individually identified elephants, comprising 65 females and 50 males, representing approximately 80% of the estimated park’s population.
