Alongside fixing the pollution that feeds invasive plant growth. The milestone is welcome. The measure of success is whether the river stays healthy and the people restoring it have decent, sustained work.
Amazing! The Vaal reopening shows what biodiversity restoration looks like in practice: people doing difficult, skilled work to care for a river. South Africa’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan should recognise and fund that work over the long term.
WATCH | The Vaal River has been reopened for boating, marking a significant milestone in the river's restoration after the successful removal of invasive aquatic plants that had choked sections of the waterway.

@ZungulaVuyo Misinformation: this post is trying to erase decades of our work, evidence, collective action from public memory to push a political agenda. THIS IS A LIE. It obscures why those efforts have struggled to achieve structural change, particularly as this is finally being frontlined.
@naledimashishi Absolutely irresponsible custodian of capital. This is not how transitioning to self sustainability works. How can he be so married to aggressive and extractive practices like this.
@Stellarated I have been trying to locate the report for last year's. Found the plan. Engaged with the 2026/2 plan, which informed the Budget. But difficult to critically engage in absence of progress report. I may have missed it somewhere? Is there a link!
@UyphiwoM@ms_tourist@Stellarated This would not be surprising if true. Unacceptable as a funding instrument to continue to deliver profits for highly concentrated food chain monopolies (almost).
I published an open letter to Minister Malatsi on the Draft National AI Policy. It's received more attention than I expected and I have received TOO MANY media interview requests. I won't be reposting coverage, doing media interviews, or going on podcasts about it. This isn't about building a personal platform. The stakes are too high for that. I'm now engaging directly with the Minister's office, and I'll be participating in the policy dialogue hosted by the Wits School of Law and the Mandela Institute. That's where the real work happens, in the room, on the detail, with the people who can shape the outcome. South Africa has a narrow window to get this right. I'd rather spend it in substantive engagement than in content cycles. If you care about this, please read the draft policy yourself and please submit your comments before 10 June. The country needs more voices in that process, not more social media commentary about mine. Apologies to media outlets and journalists that have DM'd me; this is my final response to those enquiries.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has instructed the ministers of water and sanitation and cooperative governance and traditional affairs to urgently attend to Johannesburg’s escalating water crisis instead of attending the 2026 state of the nation address. https://t.co/Z6HvMxZmZW
@KhananiShingan1 2/2 magnesium spray under your feet, lymphatic 6-flow set, put up legs against wall for 10mins, sleep hypnosis vids. Don't have to pile it all up. Try one at a time to see what works.
There are also sleep clinics.
