Our #ImageOfTheDay was of a dumbo octopus and now we have video of another dumbo. That's right -- we're making it a Double Dumbo #OctopusFriday!
The one in the video was seen while exploring off the coast of North Carolina in 2019 at approximately 900 meters (2,590 feet).
💕Happy Valentine’s Day weekend! Enjoy this #deepsea love story courtesy of @SciShow, with some great pics and video from @SchmidtOcean 💕

Applications are open for the 2020 NOAA OER (@oceanexplorer ) Explorer-in-Training Program. Great opportunity to gain valuable experience in deepwater mapping and exploration! Deadline is Jan 31 https://t.co/d1KtSxBmaT
Dr. Cordes' and his team made headlines for the discovery of a coral reef off the coast of South Carolina. His lab at Temple continues to explore the Gulf of Mexico while working on the effects of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on deep-sea coral communities. #TempleResearchGala
#Newstudy by #WHOI observes the negative impacts of deep-sea mining on microbes, the basis of many marine food chains from the seafloor up. Losing microbial diversity could mean missing out on future medical insights, says @JulesDeep#NSFfunded @NSF_GEO

Support the designation of 21 coral HAPCs in the Gulf of Mexico through the public comment page. We have been working on this for a few years now and our best Lophelia and octocoral garden sites are in there. RT please!

The last major #DEEPSEARCH mission has come to an end. In just 9 days at sea, we deployed 17 CTDs and 8 trawls, collecting hundreds of samples to take back to the lab for further study. And, we all managed to color-coordinate in our brand new Nancy Foster swag!
Some species of corals in the Gulf of Mexico are thousands of years old. Others build reefs 50 feet tall. All are slow growing and can take decades to recover from damage. Urge @NOAA to enact vital protections for these habitats. https://t.co/A4ZTgxDkF6
A hermit crab lives in (Halloween-ly!) ghostly white Lophelia coral. In addition to providing habitat, these corals can form ridges & mounds, shaping ocean bottom as a kind of “living geology”: https://t.co/Gt71u7Q0jZ
Start of next #Okeanos mission & #Halloween are almost here!!
Just because we’re at sea doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate this spooky season. Highlights so far include pumpkin carving and a #DEEPSEARCH tucker trawl catch that included the real-life inspiration for Alien, Phronima sedentaria! @oceanexplorer @BOEM_DOI @USGSAquaticLife
Info on next #Okeanos expedition: From Oct 31-Nov 21, we'll conduct mapping & ROV ops (dives!!) to explore deep waters of SE U.S. continental margin: https://t.co/5MeN9Xg5tI
Think deep-sea corals & sponges, midwater habitats, biogenic mounds, unique geologic features, & more!
After a short delay in port, we’re off to a solid start on our @NOAA Ship Nancy Foster cruise. The @NIOZatSea lander is safely aboard with 6 months worth of data for us to analyze!
#DEEPSEARCH researchers leave today on a 10-day cruise aboard the R/V Nancy Foster (owned and operated by @NOAA) No live ROV stream unfortunately, but some very important sampling will take place!! @OceanDeepSearch
