ETHIOPIA ― Questions about Abiy Ahmed's credibility are not new. His educational background has faced persistent scrutiny because publicly verifiable records have been difficult to establish.
His media appearances tell a similar story. His limited ability to communicate spontaneously in English seems to make "unscripted" interviews a particularly risky exercise.
Apparently, the safest interview for Abiy Ahmed is one where the questions are known beforehand, the answers are carefully rehearsed, and spontaneous, open-ended questioning is kept safely out of the equation.
After his previous staged appearance was engulfed in plagiarism-related controversy, he seems to have developed a remarkable allergy to mainstream, unscripted interviews. He has avoided them ever since, and judging by his track record, spontaneous questioning may remain permanently off the menu.
Call it whatever you want, but "credibility" certainly isn't his cup of tea.
ETHIOPIA ― Bacha Debele’s story starts with ten years in an EPLF prison camp from 1981 until his release with more than 110,000 other Ethiopian POWs in 1991.
During his captivity, he joined a cultural group formed by prisoners like him, and spent the years denouncing the Derg regime and praise his captors, the EPLF.
During the 1998 to 2000 border war, however, he commanded the Ethiopian force that attempted to seize the port of #Assab, a campaign that ended in a spectacular failure and resulted in major losses among his troops that he openly recounted the defeat as "ተጨፈጨፍን/we were annihilated".
Despite that record, he was promoted to Major General by 2008 under the political and ethnic “quota” system of the time, and later retired around 2011 with the rank of Lieutenant General.
This week, he appeared on a YouTube interview and declared that he had never been a prisoner of war.
We understand why he would want to distance himself from that past. He seems deeply uncomfortable being reminded of his years as a POW in Eritrea. That is why, every time he shows his ugly face on television, he seems to spit nothing but “war” against Eritrea.
Perhaps he believes another confrontation is the only way to rewrite his past and manufacture the heroic legacy he never had.
But history has a way of catching up with people like him. If he chooses the path of war again, he should be prepared to face the consequences of his own choices, just as others who followed the same path have done. (Hint: Col. Bezabih Petros)
𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐚 𝐃𝐞𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐞: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐎𝐖 𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐖𝐚𝐬 𝐍𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐚 𝐏𝐎𝐖 💥
Ethiopians have long known that several senior generals in today's military were once POWs in #Eritrea, while few others were also captured by the TPLF in Tigray, including Abiy Ahmed's Chief of Staff, Field Marshal Berhanu Jula.
Then comes 𝐋𝐭. 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐚 𝐃𝐞𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐞, who recently denied ever being a POW in Eritrea and challenged his captors to come forward with evidence. 🫣
Apparently, the evidence does not have to come from his former captors.
𝐌𝐚𝐣. 𝐆𝐞𝐧. 𝐀𝐛𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐚 𝐆𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐚, himself a former Eritrean POW currently serving as a senior government official in Abiy Ahmed's administration, has already publicly recounted the story behind how he got the nick name "Bacha" while in captivity and how he adopted it as his first name later.
"Atinkut" Debele was his original name, allegedly.
According to Abadula, “Atinkut” was sick for an extended period while in captivity. After recovering, he volunteered for a less menial task, such as preparing powdered milk for his fellow prisoners. He apparently added so much water that he ruined the mixture. A fellow POW then mocked him with, “አንበጨበጨከው (Anbechebechkew)”, essentially telling him he had watered it down beyond recognition. Since then, the prisoners started calling him with the nickname “Bacha” in short.
And just like that, "Atinkut" became Bacha and he eventually adopted that nickname as his first name after being released from captivity in 1991.
Today, the same Bacha Debele got a promotion to Lieutenant General rank and now serving as #Ethiopia's ambassador to #Kenya.
So, General, why go looking for evidence from the Eritrean captors when one of the prisoners who was there has already told the story?

#BREAKING ⚡️Armed bandits in #Ethiopia’s Benishangul-Gumuz region today massacred more than 34 truck drivers, and burned dozens of trucks along the Gilgel Beles-Mankush route.
Kidnappings and highway robberies have become rampant across many parts of the country as the Abiy Ahmed administration continues to struggle to maintain control outside the capital.
However, the scale and brutality of this attack stand out even by recent standards.
