"The ocean is our planet's heart. How much of your heart would you want to protect? A third? A half?" The legendary Sylvia Earle continues to share wisdom and remind us that humans are not just the problem, but also the solution @IMPAC5Canada#ocean#mpa#conservation#30x30
NEW PAPER! 🦈🐟
In this open access review we provide an update on the latest advances in shark depredation research and discuss key principles for management and mitigation of depredation.
Thanks to all those involved in this great team effort!

@aims_gov_au have released their annual report summarising results of their Long-Term Monitoring Program of coral condition
- it's a mixed bag of news for our Reef

Check out this recent publication by lab member @ofwildseas on the social complexities of #shark#depredation. Her research explores shark-fisher conflict through fisher perceptions and experiences with sharks taking their catch on the #GreatBarrierReef.

Loving the growing literature at the interface of #SharkScience, #SocialScience & #HWC@IUCNShark@hwctf 👏
👉 Shark depredation conflict extends beyond economic costs ~ Clashing key stakeholder values create a deeply rooted conflict ~ Distrust in mgmt & science adds complexity.
My first paper is officially published in Biological Conservation!! Excited to share our findings about fisher perceptions and experiences with #shark depredation on the GBR https://t.co/WN47F1BYSn
Grateful for all the fishers who trusted us to share their perspectives in hopes to better understand the complexities of how #shark depredation affects GBR #fisheries
As opposed to economic losses, our interviews found a primary source of this conflict stems from perceived conflicting conservation values surrounding sharks and revealed major fisher distrust of scientists and management
Happy #WorldOceansDay. Here are some of my favourite stingrays (porcupine ray, mangrove whipray and cowtail stingray) from our research at @JCUOIRS. Stingrays play important roles in nearshore habitats and love hanging out in the mangroves. #WorldOceansDay2022@jcu
Senator Chris Murphy (@ChrisMurphyCT): "The 14 kids dead in an elementary school in Texas right now. What are we doing? What are we doing? Just days after a shooter walked into a grocery store to gun down African American patrons we have another Sandy Hook on our hands."
