Putin doesn't want this war, but he feels he can't back down now without looking weak. Ukrainians shouldn't give him an inch of Ukraine, but they should seek to offer him what Sun Tzu called a "golden bridge"—a pretext to withdraw that he can portray to his people as a victory.
