I wholeheartedly agree, especially when the project is growing very fast and the architecture is old, in some situation the creation of "reusable helpers" will create a mess.
I wish more people would appreciate the power of copy&paste. DRY too often leads to plenty of "reusable helpers". But software grows and what seemed reusable in the beginning ends up with lots of branches inside. Copy&paste until you find the proper abstraction is a good default.

1. Create discrete, well-named, pure functions (Return value is determined solely by input values. No side-effects).
2. Test each func in isolation.
3. Test the composition of these funcs. Don't mutate values. Return new data instead.
