OSUN STATE ELECTION - THE LESSONS

To every season, its harvest; to every contest, its verdict. The battle drums of Osun have fallen silent, and as the Yoruba say, when we play the king's drum, we play it with respect. So let respect be the first note struck.

Congratulations, therefore, are in order to the incumbent Governor of Osun State, His Excellency Ademola Adeleke, who has once more been crowned by the will of the people and handed another four years to steer the ship.

I remain convinced - and time is a patient witness - that the candidate of the APC carried the deeper well of vision, the sharper blade of intellect, the more fertile soil of governance - but that is besides the fact at this point, for elections are not won on capacity, mental genius and vision alone but also on antecedent, grassroot appeal and strategic collaborations amongs other ingredients.

Therefore, Deserving or not, the Governor has won a free, fair, transparent contest, and Caesar must be given what is Caesar's.

Another serving of my congratulations clearly goes to the electoral body, INEC, and specifically the Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, for competence and diligence lavishly expressed in this process and that instills confidence in us all that the commission is indeed prepared for the General Elections come January.

Therefore, let no one strip naked in the marketplace of hypocrisy to wail what they once applauded when Asiwaju and the APC inevitably emerge comfortable winners in a landslide victory in January. A knife that cuts yam does not suddenly refuse to cut meat. Elections are not credible only when the opposition wins.

Abundant gratitude goes to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the maturity of statesmanship to see democracy survive even when the outcome are sometimes not pleasing on a personal note as far as partisan politics is concerned. Only those who can swallow the bitterness of defeat deserve the sweetness of victory. Democracy is not a throne for the fragile; it is a forge for the resilient.

Unreserved commendations go to the brave, loyal and committed supporters of the APC for their valiant efforts to see that the APC and its candidate put up a worthy fight in the contest.

Despite the consistent expression of optimism and confidence on media, we were never under the illusion that defeating an incumbent Adeleke with his formidable family name and impenetrable grassroot appeal will be a walk in the park - Yet, they gave it their all.

From Chief Sunday Dare (@SundayDareSD) for his leadership, APC National Secretary @DrSRJ_, my brother The Tiger Otega @otegaogra, to the scholar Ogbeni Dipo, PhD @OgbeniDipo for his sacrifice, labour and inputs to see the man he believes in emerge - and to the nameless thousands who bled ink and sweat for the progressive mandate - thank you.

And thank you, above all, for the dignity of not crying rigging in defeat's aftermath. Such restraint is the very fabric that separates lions from the rabid mongrels baying at Ekute's heel.

But when the corpse of this election is finally laid upon the table for postmortem, this truth will surface like oil upon water: APC did not lose on Saturday. The battle was already lost long before AMBO's name was ever whispered as candidate. Scrutinize it, dissect it, hold it to the light - the seeds of this defeat were sown as far back as 2018. But that, dear reader, is an epistle for another dawn.

As I set down my golden pen this hour, let me leave you with a parable to chew like bitter kola before dawn breaks:

In the next era of Osun Politics - New Leaders must emerge to join the outgoing fray if APC must survive in Osun State. For the tree that refuses to grow new branches invites the axe of irrelevance.

But to defeat the APC in the 2027 Presidential race, I fear unity is not enough. Unity is the shield that protects the warrior - but a shield alone has never won a war.

You will need to find a candidate with these precise combination of attributes- the vision of Awolowo; the cult-like following of Buhari and the Master-Strategy of Asiwaju Himself.

The vision of Awolowo to convince the teeming millions of Nigerians who are sold to the Asiwaju Renewed Philosophy that you can offer something remotely better.

The cult-like following of Buhari - particularly in the North, where devotion is not persuaded but inherited. to closely challenge Asiwaju's intimidating numbers of devotees who joyfully market the monumental achievements of this administration.

You cannot out-market Asiwaju's joyful army of devotees with numbers alone; you need worshippers, not merely voters.

And the Master-Strategy of Asiwaju himself, for only Asiwaju's political master-tactics can defeat Asiwaju.

Let us know when you find such a man, and even then, the man must possess above all, the remarkable antecedent to rival the man at the villa.

THE MESSAGE FOR OSUN STATE IS CLEAR: GREATNESS CANNOT BE INHERITED

Family name, ancestral heritage, noble parentage - these are never enough, particularly in leadership. Intelligence, vision, and a sense of responsibility are not transmitted through blood; after all, Prophet Eli communed with God Himself, yet sired vagabonds. Lions, indeed, fit born goat.

I do not fault the good people of Osun for taking a gamble with Governor Ademola. The older generation nurses a nostalgic affection for Senator Ayoola - the Patriarch of the Adeleke political dynasty, a Second Republic Lawmaker, a perfect gentleman as prominent in business as he was in politics.

Now, the not too old generation grew in admiration for the duo sons of the Patriach; Senator Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke Serubawon and Chief Adedeji Adeleke.

Sèrúbáwọn inherited the father's political acumen and leadership dexterity. Chief Adedeji inherited his business instinct and enterprising flair. And sadly, Governor Ademola Adeleke was left standing at the sharing of inheritance with empty palms - neither the entrepreneurial fire nor the political voltage came to meet him.

Every achievement Governor Ademola ever laid claim to, in finance or in leadership, he gathered as a parasitic vine climbs a stronger tree - feeding off his elder siblings' trunk. Chief Adedeji funded his lifestyle, and he wandered into politics only as compensation for the untimely passing of Sèrúbáwọn.

While in the Red Chamber, Governor Adeleke was never known for any revolutionary bill, decisive petition, progressive motion, or oversight exercise worthy of note. But he danced - and for that alone, he was noticed, an entertaining jester mistaken for a statesman.

I fear that in our culture of sympathy, our tradition of compassion, we have handed a man a responsibility far heavier than his shoulders were built to carry. We entrusted Osun's future to sentiment, and sentiment does not govern.

Greatness cannot be inherited, and as the good people of Osun have since confirmed, leadership is not genetically transmitted. The failure that is Governor Ademola Adeleke has done enough damage with an office that was freely gifted to him.

We have satisfied our conscience. The memory of Sèrúbáwọn has been adequately honoured - it is now time to move on. Even Sèrúbáwọn, were he alive today, would not applaud his brother's misgovernance.

The best way to honour our heroes past is good governance and developmental strides - and that is precisely what AMBO promises. Osun must now walk away from yesterday and embrace a more fulfilling tomorrow.

Key highlights include:

- Government and NARD agreed on one-week timelines for the implementation of salary adjustments, promotions, and other outstanding welfare issues.

- A standing directive has been issued to ensure house officers receive their salaries before the 10th of every month, ending delays in salary payments.

- Government reaffirmed its commitment to clearing outstanding promotion arrears and resolving the 19-month professional allowance backlog, with implementation timelines to be communicated.

- The Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Health have been directed to fast-track the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) process to enable budgetary provisions and implementation in the next fiscal year.

- The Federal Government will strengthen security in public hospitals, issue directives to create safer working environments for healthcare workers, and intensify public awareness against assaults on medical personnel.

- The Chief of Staff to the President also pledged to support legislation that would classify assaults on health workers as aggravated offences, providing stronger legal protection for medical professionals.

- NARD acknowledged the positive outcome of the meeting, expressing confidence that the agreed resolutions have substantially addressed its concerns, while noting that its National Executive Council will review the agreements before taking a final decision on the ongoing industrial action.
