Theodore Roosevelt was the first sitting president to leave the country.
In November 1906, he sailed to Panama to see the canal being clawed out of the jungle. He went in the thick of the rainy season on purpose, because he wanted to see the work at its worst, not cleaned up for a visit.
The schedule had him dining like a head of state.
Instead, with no warning, he walked into one of the mess halls built for the laborers and ate the same 30 cent meal the workers ate. Shoulder to shoulder with the men digging the ditch.
Most Tennesseans know about the Battle of Athens, when WW2 veterans fought a rebellion against local police to prevent a stolen election. What you may not know is that machine the vets were fighting was a tendril of Boss Crumpโs Democratic Memphis machine which at that time had secured control over most of the state and was reaching into historically Republican East TN. The Battle of Athens was the high water mark for Democratic power in TN, but the real turning point was the Coup against Dem Governor Ray Blanton (West) for selling pardons and the early installment of Republican Gov Lamar Alexander (East) in 1979. This sectional political struggle has gone on since the Civil War and came to an end with the election of Gov Haslam (East) in 2010. Everything since has been a mopping up operation.
