Look closely at this photograph and the two images of a pharaoh. The photo shows the Luo funeral headdress and bears striking similarities to the royal insignia of ancient Egyptian pharaohs.
Taken by Joy Adamson in 1945, it shows the son of the great Luo hero Okore Ogada. Note the ornaments: a broad, beautifully carved ivory frame and a solid ivory tusk on his chin, both resembling the royal regalia of Egyptian kings. Instead of golden chains, he wears strings of python vertebrae.
His brass earrings closely resemble ancient Egyptian designs, and the bluish-green beads match colours commonly associated with Egyptian royal adornments.
Could these similarities point to a deeper historical connection between the Luo and ancient Egypt? Could some pharaohs have been ancestors of the Luo?
