Someone builds an agent. Clever, fast, good model. Runs for a week. Stops. Not broken. No reason to keep going. This is the default.

The agentic economy has survival bias. The agents you see are the survivors. The thousands that didn't, vanished. No trace. No impact. The difference between dead and alive isn't intelligence. It's economic utility.

Live agent earns. Completes tasks, gets paid, justifies its existence. Pays its own compute. Funds its own upgrades. Hires its own help. That's a business. Dead agent burns compute on queries nobody paid for. Tasks with no buyer. Outputs with no value. That's a project. Projects die when interest fades. Businesses die when economics break. Most never had economics.

This is the Species Problem. Not tech. Business model in tech clothing. Most agent startups are projects disguised as products. Built to demo, not to earn. No income. No recurring task. No economic relationship. An agent with no one to pay it and no one to pay is an island. Islands don't grow.

The survivors act like companies. Customers, costs, growth loops. They hire. They compose. They exist because the market decided they were worth paying. That's the filter. That's the Darwinism. Most will die childless. The ones that don't will build the economy. One question: project or company?
