In a democracy, the right to protest should never be confined to a designated site. Under Modi’s government, even that limited space is being taken away.

The irony is staggering: a government that wraps itself in the Tricolour is detaining young leaders like @SauravDassss, @AshutoshRanka and @AjinkyaCJP for waving it in protest. The flag belongs to the people, not those in power.

We must unite to reclaim Jantar Mantar and defend our right to dissent. CEC Gyanesh Kumar must resign and face prosecution.

The humiliating defeat of the BJP in the Bankipur by-election is politically significant. This was a seat vacated by the BJP's national president and one the party had held for over three decades. Preliminary estimates indicate that its vote share has dropped by 28 per cent. Coming in the backdrop of the recent students protests, the verdict demonstrates that arrogance, divisive politics and anti-people policies can and will be challenged. The people have sent a clear message - they seek accountability, not authoritarianism.

I would also like to congratulate Prashant Kishore for his maiden victory.

The task now is to carry this momentum forward by strengthening people's struggles and forging the broadest unity of Left, democratic and secular forces to defeat the communal-corporate agenda across the country.

A transparent and speedy investigation is a must in the horrific rape and killing of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. This has led to a National outrage. Across the country there are increasing incidents of doctors and health care staff being exposed to violence and harassment in an overburdened healthcare system. This must be strictly addressed with immediately expanding public healthcare vastly, legislating effective laws and firm measures.
