Looking for true passive income? Write a book. It’s easy, and I can show you how.
Plus, find out why Alien Erotica is Amazon's number one book category? Read on.
The Why:
Self-publishing has never been easier and more profitable. I am going to focus this post on Amazon publishing, but there are dozens of book sites and platforms to publish to.
The Why:
Once you click the publish button, you’re done, and the money faucet turns on. Kinda.
I read about people on X being excited about $500 monthly from a rental property. I make thousands off my books with virtually $0 investment.
You get an author page on Amazon that helps build social credibility.
You can tell people: Go to Amazon and search for my (your) name.
To grow your library, you can sell each book's localized (different languages) versions.
Your book can be your “business card” to give away.
If you make it, you can call yourself a Best-Selling Author (more on that below).
The How:
I can’t tell you what to write about but see below to find the best-selling books in each category to guide you. I suggest you write about something you know and are interested in. My best-selling book is about how I started a $1M business using my phone. Super niche but super popular.
The possibilities are endless:
@PriteshSMB should be writing about being in the independent hotel business or creating the ultimate PTAC repair manual. (riches in the niches).
@gaz_biz should be sharing his gassy wisdom and stories in a book about turning sales of single cigarettes into a $100M gas distributor. Not to mention the trick with the “smoked” sandwiches.
@mhp_guy could write a weekly book with his factory of ADHS business ideas.
You get the idea. This is not rocket science. Write what you know or dictate it and convert it to a transcript.
Get social. Join some publishing groups. These free groups, usually on Facebook, Reddit, and other platforms, are made up of self-publishing folks helping each other out. You can learn a ton by hanging out, reading, and posting questions. You want to build up some credibility in the group BEFORE you publish. Give yourself 3-6 months.
👩🎓Start researching topics. Use an App like Publisher Rocket (no affiliation) to find the best-selling books in every category. More on Rocket below.
Once you have a topic – start writing. It’s not different from writing posts on X. You don’t have to write long chapters, and your book doesn’t have to have hundreds of pages. Quality over quantity. Just ask @FinPhilosopher, author of Every Day is a Vacation.
📢Start talking about your upcoming book in the self-publishing groups. You want to get involved and build a circle of support – crucial when you first launch.
🤖A note about AI: using AI apps to help you brainstorm and outline is great. But ChatGPT and others will not write a fantastic book for you. People want to hear from YOU. Your stories connect and help your book get great reviews, leading to more sales.
Format your book. You can use the Kindle Publisher App or any of the dozens of other eBook formatting services online. Kindle Pub is free – my favorite.
📙Before you publish – jump back into the Publisher Rocket App to find out what category has the LEAST amount of competition for your topic. To become a best seller, your book must sell more copies than any other book in a specific category over a 24-hour.
You don’t need to pick a category that is EXACTLY a match for your book! Just get kinda close when you find a sleepy category you think you can own for at least 24 hours. This is the power of Publisher Rocket. You can see how many books are sold in 24 hours to be best sellers. You want to find a somewhat popular category where the best seller sells a small amount daily.
For example, being a best seller in the entrepreneur category is super hard and takes a ton of marketing money.
But suppose you publish into the Business & Money > Small Business & Entrepreneurship >Consulting category. In that case, you only need to sell 25 copies of your book in one day to be a bestseller!
The 3-category limit is BS. When you create your book listing, Amazon will tell you you can only list in 3 categories. Don’t follow the rules. You can list your book in up to 10 categories, but you must email the support department to get into more than 3. They will do this for you.
Once your book is in the works – create the book page on Amazon to start the “coming soon” frenzy. Pick a date you know you can make – missing it is bad mojo with Amazon. Talk more in your social groups, and be sure to support other people when they publish. The power of reciprocity goes far here.
Your book is done. Create THREE versions for Amazon:
eBook at $9.99 or less
Paperback at $14.99 to $19.99
Hardcover (yes, people buy them) at $24.99 to $29.99
Intro pricing:
When your book goes live, you want a surge of sales. Your self-publishing friends, your newsletter subscribers, your X fans and anyone else you can get to buy in. I recommend an intro pricing of $0.99 or $1.99. You want to sell as many copies as you need to hit that Best-Seller number and get that tag on your book.
I’ve done intro pricing a few different ways. Sometimes, the $0.99 for 48 hours, or I offer some additional “secret” chapters if they order within 72 hours. You’ll learn more about how to generate initial sales in the self-publishing groups.
Promote Promote Promote:
The book should now be part of your story. One more thing you sell or give away. The eBook is the freebie when you want it to be. The paperback is your best earner, and the hardcover is your whale.
That’s a wrap! Here are some links to the tools I mentioned. I have nothing to sell to you, but I would love a retweet and a follow if you want to learn more about how I got to the other side of the grind by starting 10 companies with 4 exits.

Oh, and why is Alien Erotica the number-one book category on Amazon? I have no idea, maybe you should tell me. 😉
I bought extension cords yesterday at target. They were 2.99. The sign said they used to be $11. Like I cannot believe this is what they’ve been doing to us.
The casuals won’t be addressed but the trailblazers fans and city of Portland that I love truly will be … and they will be addressed truthfully. Stay tuned
Excited for my next chapter! @Bucks 🎟️
