Once upon a time, not all that long ago, medical authorities thought that the best way to resolve scientific controversies was to air them out, discuss the evidence on both sides, what was known and what was not, and so establish what research was needed to settle the issue.

Well, those days may be gone. Now researchers, influential authorities (and, of course, our friends the health reporters) have decided that given the opportunity to review a vitally important subject, their job is to advocate for what they believe, ignore the counterarguments and inconvenient evidence and hope for the best.

In my latest Substack, I discuss three very recent examples of this advocacy phenomenon, and compare it to how scientists used to discuss controversial science, back when they were more interested in getting the right answer than establishing their authority.

What about the FATHER MILL? (James Mill)

James and Bentham actually had far more detailed and close interactions than J.S. Mill did (he was born when Bentham was already 54). James Mill therefore more accurately reflected Bentham's views on government than J.S. Mill did.

Effectively, modern textbooks should have been an extension of BENTHAM AND (the father) MILL, whereas they reflect the complete inversion/ perversion of Sidgwick and Pigou (with J.S. Mill at least partly responsible for the mess).

I should have learnt from economics the MYRIADS of ways in which the government is NECESSARILY evil. Instead, economics textbooks taught me CLOSE TO ZILCH. NOTHING OF VALUE. I learnt everything of value from my own 38 year experience in governments (Indian/ Australian). At the end of all this, I can confirm that James Mill and Bentham were absolutely right. We need to RE-START ECONOMICS by going back to these two thinkers (plus Adam Smith, etc).

There ought to be THREE parts of economics: (a) Government (b) Markets and (c) Macroeconomics.

Tragically, "public choice theory" is a microscopic part of economics today - never taught in introductory or intermediate courses (and rarely in graduate courses). It needs to be the FIRST PART of economics.
