#ONGC strikes gas in the deep waters of Mahanadi Basin.

MDW-28, the maiden well of ONGC’s current deepwater campaign in the Mahanadi Basin is flowing gas with encouraging rates and sustained reservoir pressure.

The campaign was launched on 25 July 2026 by Hon'ble Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas Shri @HardeepSPuri, with the spudding of MDW-28 (MN-DW18-1-H-D) in the deep offshore Mahanadi Basin, aligned with the Government's Samudra Manthan initiative.

The well was perforated on 18 September 2026 following evaluation of subsurface data. It is currently flowing with a good gas rate and healthy reservoir pressure. During operations, ONGC @ChairmanONGC @singharunongc, Director (Technology & Field Services) @vikramsONGC, and Director (Exploration) @opsinhaONGC visited the drillship to interact with and encourage the crew onboard. This find, along with other discoveries in the area, can be a candidate for development through shared facilities enabled by the PNG Rules, 2025, bringing deepwater resources onstream.

ONGC will continue to push into deep and ultra-deepwater frontiers in the search for hydrocarbons, and towards India's goal of energy security.

Hopefully, a new chapter in India's energy frontier.

ONGC found gas 43 km off Odisha coast on September 18 - Well was drilled to 1623 metres and gas found between 1441 and 1452 metres, flowing at good rates.

First well under Samudra Manthan, India biggest deepwater exploration programme worth ₹84,084 crore. Government plans to drill 150 deepwater wells across 4 major offshore basins. Each well costs between $125 and $150 million.

India imports 89% of crude oil and 50% of natural gas. Finding fuel at home means spending less money buying from other countries

This is not one lucky find. India has been striking gas in multiple offshore zones recently. Oil India found gas in Andaman Sea last year with 87% methane content. ONGC found gas off Tamil Nadu coast in ultra deep water.

KG Basin is already producing 25000 barrels per day from deepwater. ONGC also signed partnership with BP to explore Andaman, Mahanadi, Saurashtra, and Bengal basins together.

India is drilling in 4 different areas at same time, spreading risk across many wells

India spent nearly $19 billion on oil and gas imports in May 2026 alone. Country imports 89% of crude oil and 50% of natural gas it uses. Domestic oil production has fallen 22% over past ten years even as demand keeps growing.

Over half of oil and 60% of gas passes through Strait of Hormuz, which saw disruption this year. Gas found in deep sea today will take 5 to 8 years to reach production.

🚨 Big development off Odisha coast!

ONGC has struck gas in the Mahanadi Deepwater Basin, around 43 km off Konark.

The well was drilled to a target depth of 1,623 metres and has been flowing gas with encouraging flow and reservoir pressure for the last 3 days.

Its proximity to the coast offers potential for early monetisation, subject to further appraisal and commercial evaluation.

A significant development for Odisha’s offshore energy potential.

A major milestone for India’s offshore energy exploration!
ONGC continues to unlock new domestic energy sources by exploring India’s deep and ultra-deepwater frontiers as a part of the Samudra Manthan initiative launched under the visionary guidance of PM Sh @narendramodi Ji.

The discovery, along with other finds in the area, opens up the potential for cluster development through shared facilities under the PNG Rules, 2025, providing a pathway to bring deepwater resources into production more efficiently.

A mechanical engineer with an MBA from @iift_official, Shri Nettem began his ONGC journey at Mumbai High in 1991. He brings over three decades of experience spanning offshore and onshore operations, business development, field development and joint venture management.

He has played pivotal roles in Mangala oilfields joint venture and the Barmer–Bhogat heated crude oil pipeline and ONGC’s downstream expansion. His tenure with @ongcvideshltd further strengthened his international upstream experience.

At Assam Asset, he led efforts to sustain and enhance production from mature fields. At Mumbai High Asset, he provided strategic direction on production, redevelopment, asset integrity, and HSE.

As Director (Production), Shri Nettem brings deep operational expertise, strategic foresight and a strong technology orientation to further strengthen ONGC’s production performance and contribution to India’s energy security.

#ONGC proudly celebrates the extraordinary journey of Shri Ravi Shankar, Executive Director, as he marks his superannuation, a milestone that reflects nearly four decades of distinguished service, exemplary leadership, and unwavering commitment to advancing India’s energy security.

A Petroleum Engineering graduate with distinction from IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and an MBA in Finance, Shri Ravi Shankar joined ONGC in 1987 as a Graduate Trainee during the commissioning of the BPA Platform in Mumbai Offshore. Over the next nearly 39 years, he built an illustrious career spanning offshore and onshore production operations, well services, project execution, asset leadership, offshore management, and people leadership.

His early years in Mumbai Offshore laid the foundation for a career rooted in field excellence. He later moved to Ahmedabad and Jorhat, where, in leadership roles in Work-over Services, he strengthened HSE practices, improved resource planning, and introduced production-enhancement interventions, including gel-based water shut-off technology, contributing to higher efficiency and production gains.

Returning to Mumbai Offshore, Shri Ravi Shankar played a pivotal role in the commissioning and management of the technologically complex B-193 super-sour Gas Processing Platform. As Surface Manager, he drove initiatives that improved production reliability, reduced operational losses, optimized costs, and reinforced a strong safety culture across Western Offshore.

His leadership journey continued as Asset Manager – Neelam & Heera and later Asset Manager – Bassein & Satellite, where he steered one of ONGC’s most important gas-producing assets through a phase of sustained operational excellence. Under his stewardship, Bassein & Satellite Asset achieved notable milestones in production, reliability, safety, and innovation, earning recognition as one of ONGC’s best-performing assets.

As Executive Director – Western Offshore, he provided strategic leadership to India’s largest offshore producing province, overseeing field operations, development activities, pipeline integrity, emergency preparedness, and cross-functional coordination. His ability to combine technical depth with balanced judgement and collaborative leadership strengthened operational resilience across the offshore ecosystem.

In the final chapter of his career, Shri Ravi Shankar brought his vast operational experience into the people function, championing leadership development, employee engagement, collaboration, and organisational excellence, reinforcing the belief that empowered people remain the foundation of enduring performance.

Recipient of several corporate honours, including the prestigious “Manager of the Year” Award in 2015 for outstanding management of the B-193 Process Platform, he is admired for his technical excellence, integrity, humility, and people-centric leadership.

With every platform commissioned, every asset strengthened, every challenge navigated, and every team empowered, Shri Ravi Shankar has left an imprint that extends far beyond designation. His legacy reflects the very best of ONGC’s values, technical excellence, innovation, collaborative leadership, and service to the nation.
