Trying Since 1918

A doctor came to Bhagavan - Dr. Popatlal Lohara. He had studied scripture. He had visited over fifteen hundred saints and sages across the land.

He sat before Bhagavan and said, plainly:

"My mind cannot be made steady by any amount of effort have been trying-since 1918"

There was no judgment in the hall. Only stillness. Then Bhagavan quietly quoted from his own Upadesa Sara

"Continuous search for what the mind is results in its disappearance. That is the straight path."

The doctor asked: "How to search for the mind?"

Bhagavan replied:
"The mind is only a bundle of thoughts. The thoughts have their root in the 'I-thought'.
Whoever investigates the origin of the 'I-thought' for him-the ego perishes. This is the true investigation. The true 'I' is then found-shining by itself."

To another who struggled, Bhagavan said:

"See to whom the thoughts arise. They will be found to arise after the 'I-thought'. Hold the :I-thought' - they subside. Trace back the source of the 'I-thought' . The Self alone will remain."

And in a moment of deep simplicity:

"The mind is a bundle of thoughts. The thoughts arise because there is a thinker. The thinker is the ego. The ego-if sought-will automatically vanish."

When someone saw only a blank in meditation and asked what to do-

Bhagavan asked back, very gently.

"Who sees the blank? You must be there. There is consciousness witnessing the blank.

Does it mean you must go deeper and deeper?
Yes. There is no moment when you are not."

मुझे कोई संदेह नहीं है कि यदि उस दिन अदालत में उपस्थित लोगों की जूरी बनाई जाती और लोगों को गोडसे पर फैसला देने को कहा जाता तो उन्होंने भारी बहुमत से गोडसे को ‘निर्दोष’ करार कर दिया होता ।

गोडसे का ब्यान सुनने के बाद मैं उन्हें फांसी की सज़ा नहीं देना चाहता था लेकिन मैं सरकार और प्रशासन के दबाव में मजबूर था । मुझे पता है कि गोडसे को फांसी की सज़ा देकर मैंने जो पापकर्म किया है उस के कारण यमराज के घर एक भयंकर सज़ा मेरा इंतजार कर रही है। मैंने एक निर्दोष और महान देशभक्त को फांसी की सज़ा दी थी जिसके लिए भगवान मुझे कभी क्षमा नहीं करेगा।”
