Our new preprint is out: We reanalyze & expand the highly-influential Boston school mask study by Cowger et al published in @NEJM
- Our expanded sample actually found higher case rates (not significant) in the masking districts
- The authors' original findings did not hold up when not using the very specific Callaway Sant'Anna Diff in Diff methodology which we argue was inappropriate to use given the data they had
-We show districts that dropped masks 1st had the biggest drop in cases (!)
-We found prior immunity could explain up to 2/3 of the variation in case rates (!)
We discuss in detail why causal inference was inappropriate in the original paper (https://t.co/sBZoyXLKE7) including statements about masks effectively reducing cases or being able to help mitigate structural racism
Very grateful to have been able to work with this incredible team:
@AChandra_TO@ShamezLadhani@VPrasadMDMPH & Ram Duriseti
Hopefully the peer reviewed version of our paper will be available soon. In the meantime, we welcome feedback of course!
Our raw data, as always, are available on my github; link in the article

(if you ask me our paper should have been published under statistics rather than physics, but I guess arXiv disagreed!)
Scientists fight misinformation by doing good science.
Tyrants fight misinformation by censoring in the name of science.
Pseudo-scientists fight misinformation by aiding the tyrants.
That’s funny…@edutopia is describing one of the oldest and, arguably, most effective approaches to ensuring each child’s reading, writing, and arithmetic (3Rs) proficiency that’s recorded in America — i.e., the #OrtonGillingham Approach, circa 1930 (OG or OGA).
#OG comprises direct, explicit, multisensory (multimodal), structured, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive ways to teach the 3Rs in k-12 education, to mastery/proficiency, but most government-run educator preparation programs (EdPrep) do NOT incorporate its components in preservice training. 🤯 #SoldaStory
I wonder why America’s failing government-run, union-controlled #EdPrep programs, and the public education system on the whole, are just now figuring it out? 🤨

The wise words of my friend, Sandy. I hope you will read his writings, take them to heart, turn them into (good) actions, and partner with non-union parents to ensure literacy and justice for each one of G-d’s children, Randi @rweingarten. #LiteracyIsEquity

This is what teaching should be about @NEAToday. Social justice and culture wars won't help any child in the grand scheme of things. Let kids feel pride in themselves for their efforts not just what they look like or who they're attracted to.
1/Today a mom and I chatted after her children finished their sessions. The rising 3rd grade boy was BEAMING from ear to ear for today he wrote the entire alphabet in cursive with precision, and his mom relayed that her children are reading EVERYTHING at home.

@kmcgair They abandoned us Kim, it's simple. We have not moved on the spectrum, rather they've shifted their own ideologies and think we should all just follow along.
My father was an abusive alcoholic. School was where i was safe from the abuse. Had I been a child during the school closures and closures in general, it would have been worse than hell. And the mandatory reporter who reported the abuse would not have had the opportunity.
School was a constant for me too. My parents drank, & I grew up in poverty.
It was my local school that provided stability. For many families w/o close relatives, school serves as a hub.
Public schools that abandoned kids & families in 2020 will never regain that trust.#orpol
If @ORDeptEd is investigating IDEA violations about a student with autism, shouldn't they have an investigator who is knowledgeable about that disability?🤔
How will they be able to determine if #FAPE was offered if they just use a private investigator?🤦♀️#orpol@FACTOregon
@unheardparent@ORDeptEd@FACTOregon ODE should also have investigators with legal expertise on IDEA. They do not. Legal opinions are written and issued by unlicensed attorneys without specialized training IDEA. The head of the department “phones it in” from Nebraska where he lives.
You will never get away with this grift.

@SecCardona is part of the reason why children who are locked into public schools learn about gun safety drills before they learn how to read.
Secretary Cardona is part of the reason why the #ScienceofReading and direct, explicit, multimodal, systematic instruction is withheld from teachers in preservice government-run educator preparation programs, and inservice training and professional development — i.e., Cardona is a reason why public school teachers do not have the knowledge and skills to teach each child how to read proficiently, and why America’s in the throes of a #reading crisis. #FAPEdenied
