Before Wi-Fi in your CHU, before FaceTime, before everyone carried a smartphone… There was the MWR INTERNET & PHONE CENTER.

This was probably the most emotionally dangerous building on the entire FOB.

You'd wait 45 minutes for a computer, log in, open Yahoo Mail, and then wait some more.

And wait some more. "LOADING…" you'd finally get one email from home, only for the dude running the place to yell, “YOU GOT FIVE MINUTES LEFT!” 😂😂😂

And the phone booths were even better. You'd stand in line forever, clutching an AT&T calling card like it was classified material. Finally calling home:

“Hey, babe, it's me.”
3-second satellite delay.
“What?”
“I SAID IT'S ME.”
“What?”
“NEVER MIND.”

Meanwhile, somebody three booths down would be having the loudest deployment breakup in GWOT history, and 15 dudes in line would be pretending they couldn't hear every single word.

And God help you if a COMMS BLACKOUT happened. Suddenly, everybody knew. Nobody asked questions.
