Does America go through a major reset about every 80 years?

Look at the pattern. Each of these periods brought a major crisis, followed by a new era of growth:

Late 1600s: Political upheaval in the British colonies, followed by decades of colonial expansion. America was not yet a nation, so this is the loosest comparison.

1776–1780s: The American Revolution created an independent country. Trade and settlement expanded as the new nation took shape.

1861–1865: The Civil War changed the country. The decades that followed brought a huge industrial boom in railroads, factories, and steel.

1929–1945: The Great Depression and World War II transformed the economy. Afterward came the postwar boom in jobs, housing, and consumer spending.

2025–2026: We are now about 80 years past the end of World War II. Are we living through another period that will reshape America and lead to a new kind of prosperity?

The pattern is striking: major upheavals have repeatedly been followed by a changed America and a new kind of growth. It doesn’t guarantee another boom, but it raises a question worth asking: What will the next American era look like?

Reference: The Fourth Turning: An American Prophecy (1997), by William Strauss and Neil Howe. The authors explored the idea that American history moves through roughly 80- to 100-year cycles, with a major crisis bringing each cycle to a close.
