Johann Bernoulli posed the problem to the mathematicians of Europe in 1696; it remains vital today in quantum mechanics and many other fields.
If a ball is to roll down a ramp which connects two points, what must be the shape of the ramp's curve, such that the descent time is a minimum?
Intuition says that it should be a straight line. That would minimise the distance, but the minimum time happens when the ramp curve is a cycloid.
@TheMathFlow Makes complete sense. A circle maximizes area for a given perimeter, and a cycloid is generated by a circle rolling along a flat surface. Fascinating that this simple geometry produces the optimal trajectory! More intuitively, the steep descent lets the ball accelerate early.

@Rainmaker1973 And this is why being connected to nature is so valuable. All work aside, make time throughout the day to think creatively and look at things from different perspectives.
every time you have a thought, neurons connect and strengthen a path in your brain. one thought, repeated enough, becomes a structure.
it's not a metaphor. your brain literally rewires itself every time you think. every thought fires neurons that physically strengthen their connection, making that same path easier to travel next time.
the science backs this up: whatever you keep thinking, your brain keeps building.
that's not motivation talking. that's just how neurons work.
so the real question was never whether you can change. it's what you're choosing to build, on purpose, right now.
@alexeixbt The saying goes, “It’s just like riding a bike”. You train your brain through repetition, especially during childhood when neuroplasticity is high. Maybe that’s part of why the things we repeatedly do as kids can stay with us for life.

🚨 The Moon Is Moving Earth’s Oceans 🌕🌊
The Moon’s gravity constantly pulls on Earth’s oceans, creating tides that shift billions of tons of water around our planet.
Without the Moon, Earth’s tides would be dramatically different.
How powerful is that? 👀
The Giver by Lois Lowry explores a society that eliminates pain to create a “perfect” world.📖
Everyone follows strict rules and lives without color. But Jonas discovers memories of suffering and beauty.
Is eliminating pain worth sacrificing freedom and emotion?💜
