This is also why if you want to form a new habit, you need consistent daily repetition over 2–3 months.
This time period gives the brain enough time to complete the full structural remodeling process.
In the first week, learning is mostly functional/strengthening existing synapses via LTP(*).
(*) LTP is Long-Term Potentiation and occurs when repeated correlated firing of a presynaptic neuron and a postsynaptic neuron leads to a long-lasting increase in synaptic strength.
This is also the brute force stage where you rely heavily on willpower and experience a lot of discomfort every time you attempt to practise.
After that up until week 4, new dendritic spines start forming and some new synapses appear.
This is where you begin to feel the behavior is “getting easier,” but it’s still fragile and you can go back into your old habits if you skip a day or two of practice.
It's literally because many of these early spines will disappear if practice stops.
But, if you pass week 4, the brain now decides which new connections are worth keeping.
Repeated practice stabilizes the useful new spines and circuits while pruning away the weak or competing ones.
This is the slow, energy-expensive part of structural plasticity.
Neurotrophic factors like BDNF are critical here for spine maturation and long-term survival.
Then after a couple of more weeks (in the 60-70 day mark) the behavior becomes more automatic because the new neural pathways are now physically wired in and more efficient.
The prefrontal cortex hands off control to the basal ganglia and habit circuits.
Neurogenesis is quite cool overall.

You can feel when your thinking loses sharpness long before performance metrics show it. That is not fatigue. It is reduced cerebral blood flow.
