@steve02760737@stefen_rosner who reported that? unless it was staple, friedman, or lebrun then i wouldn't put too much stock in it.
i wanted lee back, but three years at $5.4m would have been crazy. i'm glad lee got paid. islander forever
@JackTFaller@SeanCMcCarthy@agraybee are you under the impression that accounting isn’t part of business school? or that there is a track/degree that is simply “business”
@cannotstress@thornegoth@ambron13@notmoosenba@mldiffley that’s the first good argument i’ve seen for penalties. maybe we’ll just have to live with it being a flawed solution, but i can’t help thinking that there’s a better option out there somewhere
@cannotstress@thornegoth@ambron13@notmoosenba@mldiffley the field is too big to play indefinitely at 11v11, i agree. games would turn into a slog the later they go. but i still think there’s some better solution out there than ending games with the shootout as currently constructed. maybe have it be a breakaway instead of a spot kick
@NotDefinitely68@thornegoth@ambron13@notmoosenba@mldiffley it’s dramatic. so is spinning a roulette wheel at the casino. that doesn’t mean it should be used to determine winners and losers in the most important competitions in world football
@NotDefinitely68@thornegoth@ambron13@notmoosenba@mldiffley yes, keepers can study shooter tendencies to prepare, but at the end of the day they are guessing on which way they’re going to shoot. they have no choice but to guess because the rules are punitive against keepers on spot kicks. it’s way more weighted towards luck than skill
@cannotstress@thornegoth@ambron13@notmoosenba@mldiffley with extra substitutions, perhaps. i know it’s not a 1:1 comparable but hockey goes to ot/shootout during the regular season but plays indefinitely until somebody scores for playoff games. i think we could at least come up with a better system for shootouts for knockout games
@thornegoth@ambron13@notmoosenba@mldiffley yes both teams kick and so it is even from a fairness perspective. i mean even out the odds of success/failure of the kicks so it’s more based on 1v1 skill than whether the taker boots it or the keeper guesses the correct side to dive to
@thornegoth@ambron13@notmoosenba@mldiffley okay but why does it have to be something that is so heavily reliant on guesswork and luck? the goal keeper is at such an obvious disadvantage. at least make it a breakaway or something to even things out a bit. it doesn’t have to be a free throw competition
@cannotstress@thornegoth@ambron13@notmoosenba@mldiffley i have noticed that sometimes players miss, yes. 120 minutes of football just to play a little mini-game of not football to see who goes home and who stays in the tournament? that never sat right with me
