The poorest economies in the world are not achieving economic growth.
The consequence is that progress against the very worst poverty is coming to a halt.
This is one of the worst problems in the world today, but hardly gets any attention.
@DavQuinn Interesting. Does this suggest there are still more births than deaths when you include immigrants and their children, but that the gap narrows when you refer to the Irish-born subgroup?
Where are more people dying than being born?
For most of human history, more people were born each year than died. Populations grew very slowly for most of this history, then rapidly in recent centuries, as child mortality plummeted and people lived longer.
But this is changing. As the map shows, deaths now outnumber births in a growing number of countries across Europe and East Asia.
The balance of births and deaths tells us about a country’s “natural population change” — whether it would grow or shrink without any international migration.
Where deaths outnumber births, the population will shrink unless enough people move in from abroad to make up the gap.

Honoured to have @sapinker as a reader of 'Conspicuous Cognition'. Here is a concise summary of my article's analysis of why and how social media fuels right-wing populism: https://t.co/fdl1Bf1zB5
@Iskesullas I'm not sure if that is fair. He is arguing that a boycott might not be the correct decision, as the moral, political, and economic costs could be too high. It's possible to say he's arguing in good faith even if you disagree with his take.
