The magic you’re looking for is in the full-assed effort you’re avoiding.
It’s amazing how many people will rationalize avoiding skill development on the grounds of “nah bro, I’d rather have a life.”
The thing is, you can make serious progress climbing pretty much any skill tree if you just put in 30 minutes of focused effort every day.
But it has to be fully focused – a “full-assed” effort – and you have to be continually upping the level of challenge as your capabilities increase.
You have to work intensely enough that you come out of each session seriously winded. Meaning that either your brain feels like mush or your body feels like jell-o (or both).
When someone fails to make decent progress towards their learning or fitness goals and cites lack of time as the issue, they’re often wrong.
It’s often not lack of time but rather lack of willingness to put forth a full-assed effort under a continually increasing level of challenge.
If you put in a half-assed effort then you get a quarter of the results at most.
That’s what causes the purported lack of time.
To get the equivalent of 30 minutes full-assed, you have to put in at least 2 hours half-assed, which you quite reasonably might not have time for.
Or you put in 30 minutes half-assed and get the equivalent of 7.5 minutes full-assed, which doesn’t move the needle fast enough on your progress for you to reach your goal in a reasonable timeframe.
The magic you’re looking for is in the full-assed effort you’re avoiding.
Rushing feels productive. It isn’t.
When you rush, you skip thinking, cut corners, and create mistakes that require rework. Rework is the slowest form of progress.
Slowing down forces clarity. Clarity improves judgment. Good judgment eliminates false starts.
Fast isn’t speed. Fast is fewer reversals.
The entrepreneurs who win aren’t the ones moving the fastest they’re the ones who pause long enough to choose the right direction once.
the secret to happiness to me, is pretty simple:
- something worth doing
- someone worth loving
- something to believe in
- something to look forward to
this is so true, hard work won’t lead to success, “systems” will. here’s 5 simple principles to do the hard thing you’re avoiding:
1. trap yourself. tell people about your plan. delete distractions. assume a deadline.
2. stop relying on willpower, it’s not an infinite resource. every distraction you fight, consumes that resource.
3. lock the time, place, and trigger. put yourself in situations that trigger you to act (if-then algorithm)
4. bring in checklists and structures like pilots and surgeons do. it must be simple and help you focus.
5. you must BECOME the system. motivation doesn’t drive repetition, it’s the other way around. your brain loves patterns.
A lot of young people don’t struggle because they lack talent.
They struggle because no one ever showed them what talent actually looks like in the early stages (speaking from personal experiences).
Real talent development is ugly.
It looks like confusion, boredom, repetition, slow progress, self doubt, and the quiet fear that maybe you’re not built for this.
Most kids think they’re failing because no one told them that this is exactly what the process is supposed to feel like.
When you show a young person the real arc - how skill compounds slowly, how bad drafts become good ones, how repetition creates confidence, how learning curves are painful but predictable - you give them something priceless:
A map.
And once someone sees the map, their whole trajectory changes.
Not because the path gets easier, but because the difficulty finally makes sense.
You need to be side quest maxxing. Get your pilots license. Get scuba certified. Go sky diving. Get your coastal cruising certificate. Become a sommelier. Get every niche / pointless certificate & license you can.
