Lord Curzon said that the British Empire should always prevent the emergence of a European hegemon, and therefore must support Europe's secondary power vs. the first one, no matter who each may be. This applies also to the US empire and to the Middle East. With Iran on the ropes, Israel became the region's Hegemon, and so the US Empire had to maintain a counter balance. But who? Egypt is bankrupt, Turkey is not in the league (as Mr. Fidan admitted), and Jordan is a basket case. Only Iran + Hezbollah + Hamas remain. So the US Empire could not afford a victory over them-- it needs them all to hem in Israel's hegemony. No, this cannot be mentioned in polite company, but as Mr. Luttwak knows, Strategy is a hard mistress.
