@achimdittler Frage: Ist es nicht so, dass schon bei der Gewinnung von Erdgas sehr viel Treibhausgase entweichen, die viel wirksamer sind, als die, welche bei der Verbrennung entstehen? Das wird meist unterschlagen…

UNRWA’s Commissioner General @UNLazzarini addressed the @UN General Assembly calling for the support of Member States, asking them to act in defence of #PalestineRefugees and of UNRWA, and to defend our collective future. Full statement: https://t.co/Bc7sqNWFRU
Today, millions of #PalestineRefugees face the alarming possibility of losing the essential services provided by UNRWA — education, healthcare, and social support — that sustain their daily lives.

Bodies like the EU, @IntlCrimCourt, and @CIJ_ICJ, alongside various @UN bodies, have deviated from their founding principles of protecting civilians and upholding justice. In over 13 months, these bodies have failed to stop Israel’s genocide in Gaza

Using bulldozers, Israeli Forces severely damaged today (Thursday) the @UNRWA office in the Nur Shams Camp, north of the #WestBank.
The office can no longer be used.
It was the hub to deliver basic services to more than 14,000 Palestine Refugees in the camp, including learning for children, health, sanitation & social protection.
During the Israeli military operation, roads, water + electricity networks were also destroyed in the camp.
Once again, United Nations facilities are being routinely disregarded while they must be protected at all times, including in times of conflict.
I am deeply alarmed by the Israeli Parliament’s adoption of two laws which, if implemented, will prevent the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) from undertaking its essential work in Gaza and in the occupied West Bank including East Jerusalem.
@UNRWA, an agency directly established and mandated by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution 302 (IV) of 18 December 1949, plays a critical role in providing protection, shelter, food, water, and medical care to millions of Palestinian refugees in Gaza, the occupied West Bank, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria.
A collapse of UNRWA operations in the Occupied Palestinian Territory as a result of these two laws would exacerbate an already catastrophic humanitarian situation.
This is unacceptable.
I urgently call on the Government of Israel to abide by UN resolutions and to allow UNRWA to continue its indispensable work.
RFK Jr. denounces appointments within the first Trump Administration like Mike Pompeo. But this time around in the fight between RFK Jr. and the neocons and corporate lobbyists circling Trump, who will win?
Mary Robinson condemns the Knesset's legislation that endangers @UNRWA's operations, calling it a breach of the UN Charter and urging action to protect Gaza's civilians.

"The Elders condemn in the strongest terms the passing of legislation by the Knesset which if implemented will effectively collapse UNRWA’s operations in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, with devastating consequences for Palestinian civilians in Gaza already being subjected to bombardment, displacement and starvation. Declaring UNRWA a terrorist organisation and revoking UNRWA’s immunities and privileges is a clear breach of the UN Charter. We welcome the strong statements by several world leaders criticising this legislation, which would only further division and extremism and is not in Israel’s long-term security interests.
The UN is now under an unprecedented level of attack by the Government of Israel. The recent direct attacks by Israel Defense Forces on UNIFIL positions in Lebanon violate International Humanitarian Law. The Israeli Government has also banned the UN Secretary-General from entering the country. The UN Security Council and General Assembly must respond decisively and show their collective resolve to defend and protect the UN. Failure to do so will lead to further damage to the common values and UN system on which the protection of civilians and peace and security depend across the world."
Should scientists publically talk about climate tipping point risks?
Or rather keep quiet about them and stick to climate impacts we know for certain?
What do you think?
Here's my answer at the New York Times panel event.

"It's like your babysitter. Your AIPAC babysitter, who is always talking to you for AIPAC... why would they want to tell their constituents that they've basically got a buddy system with someone who's representing a foreign country?" @RepThomasMassie (R-Ky)
Today, I told the @UN Security Council that now is the time to decide to which extent it will tolerate acts that strike at the heart of multilateralism and compromise international peace and security.
After a year of profound loss and suffering, and with no end in sight to the brutal violence engulfing the region, the need for @UNRWA’s services in #Gaza, the occupied #WestBank, & #Lebanon have never been greater. Despite this, the Agency has never been under fiercer attack.
Legislation to end our operations is ready for final adoption by the Israeli Knesset, seeking to ban UNRWA’s presence and operations in the territory of Israel and to revoke its privileges and immunities, in violation of international law.
If the bills are adopted, the consequences will be severe:
-The entire humanitarian response in Gaza - which rest on UNRWA’ infrastructure- may disintegrate.
- In the West Bank, the delivery of education, primary health care to hundred of thousand Palestine Refugees would grind to a halt.
-The Knesset legislation violates Israel’s obligations under the UN Charter and international law.
The anti-UNRWA legislation, part of a broader campaign to dismantle the Agency, seeks to strip Palestinians from their refugee status, & change – unilaterally – the parameters for a future political solution.
If passed, this sets a dangerous precedent not only in the context of the conflict in the occupied Palestinian territory but around the world.
A threat to multilateralism worldwide.

The health system’s capacity in #Lebanon is deteriorating. @WHO’s medical supplies cannot be delivered due to the almost complete closure of Beirut’s airport.
WHO calls on urgent facilitation of flights to deliver health supplies to Lebanon. Lives depend on it!
Palestinians in #Gaza are no strangers to loss. But to be dispossessed from education – which has always been a source of tremendous pride – is new.

This is policy in the West Bank: shoot first, ask no questions later.
The US cannot continue to turn a blind eye to the illegal actions of the extremist Israeli government.
We cannot allow American citizens and innocent Palestinians to be killed with impunity.
We must act.
Told @stephensackur@BBCHARDTALK there are deliberate attempts to dismantle @UNRWA that have nothing to do with neutrality.
These attempts aim at striping the Palestinians of their refugee status & at undermining the aspirations of the Palestinians for self determination.

In the #2024Index for aid transparency, @UNOCHA ranked 4⃣th among 50 organisations.
OCHA has made great strides in its performance in the Index over the past 6 years and remains committed to continual improvement.
Together, with our partners, we continue to #InvestInHumanity.
Damaging and destroying @UNRWA facilities further deprives people in #Gaza of a critical lifeline.
Humanitarian and @UN facilities must be protected.
