Yesterday, I, together with the Guild Speaker of Soroti University, joined other Guild leaders from across the country at the Parliament of Uganda to discuss East African integration.

The lines drawn in Berlin without our consent still divide brothers and sisters. Integration is how we erase them.

This is not just a good idea. Geopolitically, it is a strategy; a way to stop being marginalized by the so-called superpowers.

For the ordinary citizen: picture the opportunities in one open market of over 300 million people, stretching from the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic in the DRC.

As young Guild leaders, we will not sit on the sidelines. We intend to stand at the front and mobilize our generation for this agenda.

Dr. Elyanu Peter is a family physician under the Ministry of Health, based at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital. He graduated with Master of Medicine in Family Medicine and Community Practice from Makerere University.

He got motivation for family medicine because it is a speciality that treats patients irrespective of sex, age, and disease conditions, and above all, family physicians are team leaders. Patients are managed as a whole but not as an organ or a disease. It is a one-stop care speciality where one doctor can handle 80% of problems in children, maternity cases, adult chronic care like hypertension and diabetes, surgery, and mental health. The speciality enables him to provide services with better outcomes at less cost.

His hobbies are indoor games, listening to news and talk shows, and reading newspapers.

Cancer isn’t mystery or magic.
It’s gene mutations (errors) in DNA.
The risk factors for different cancers have already been studied and documented. The literature is there and our scientists already have the knowledge .
So “shifting energy” should mean government actually investing in research, modern diagnostics and treatment of cancer.
That’s the job.

We cannot afford to manufacture policies from scratch and expect them to work.

If government cannot regulate medical education or plan for it sustainably, interns should not pay the price for that failure.
A student at KIU invests on tuition alone UGX 7 million every semester for 11 semesters (5.5 years) only to graduate and be treated as free labour.
Want free labour? Then make medical education free.
We are not expendable.
We are not spoons to be used and discarded.
The dignity and standards of medicine are non-negotiable.
