Investing in people is investing in resilience.
Over the past three weeks, ICPAC trained Ugandan water experts in advanced hydrological modeling, enhancing national capacity to forecast floods, manage water resources, and strengthen early warning systems. Together, we are building a more climate-resilient region. Special thanks to Dr Jully Ouma , Dr @aamdihun , and ICPAC Director Dr. Abdi Fidar for leading this effort, and to the @WFPGovts for supporting the broader flood forecasting partnership. #DisasterRiskReduction #ClimateServices #ClimateResilience #EasternAfrica #ClimateAction

📣 Pleased to host a delegation from Uganda's Office of the Prime Minister, Uganda National Meteorological Authority, and partners at ICPAC for a technical exchange visit.
Together with @UNDRR_Africa under the Water at the Heart of Climate Action, we are supporting efforts to strengthen hazard monitoring, forecasting, early warning systems, and establish a national Situation Room for risk-informed decision-making.
Advancing #EarlyWarningForAll and climate resilience across Africa. 🌍
"The return on investment is much higher when we act early than dealing with a crisis."
— @aamdihun, Head of IGAD DRM Unit.
As South Sudan began the validation of its Revised National Disaster Risk Management Policy today in Juba, partners are reaffirming a shared commitment to Anticipatory Action, early warning systems and disaster resilience.
ICPAC is proud to support this milestone process alongside @UNDRR, @FAO@IOM@UNDP and @WFP among others.

Reaching the last mile with early warning information is our goal #EW4ALL. I was a pleasure to lead the discussion with @SC_inSudan & @EWSMA1@IGAD_CPAC
ℹ️ Post #GHACOF73 Side Event
Today, we held the Sudan Inception Workshop to launch and operationalize the HUSIKA Early Warning Platform, in partnership with @SC_inSudan and @EWSMA1
The initiative aims to build a multi-channel, impact-based early warning system that supports Anticipatory Action (AA) through trigger-based activation. The platform uses communication channels such as SMS to deliver timely weather and climate risk information to vulnerable communities.
📰 #GHACOF73 PRESS RELEASE
The June to September (JJAS) 2026 rainfall outlook indicates a high likelihood of below-normal rainfall across most parts of the Greater Horn of Africa, where JJAS is the main season, particularly in South Sudan, Uganda, Ethiopia, Djibouti, much of Eritrea, Sudan and western and coastal Kenya.
The highest likelihood of below-normal rainfall is projected over central, northeastern and northwestern Ethiopia, southern Sudan, and northern Uganda, where probabilities exceed 60%, with peaks reaching up to 80% in northeastern Ethiopia.

ℹ️ Drought Snapshot: Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia
The Horn of Africa is grappling with severe drought conditions as the October to December 2025 rainfall season falls critically short of expectations. In #Kenya 🇰🇪, the country is experiencing a deepening drought crisis following exceptionally poor rains between October and mid-December 2025. #Somalia🇸🇴 declared a nationwide drought emergency on 10 November 2025 as worsening conditions leave communities facing severe water and food shortages.
Meanwhile, #Ethiopia 🇪🇹 has taken proactive measures by activating its Anticipatory Action Plan (AAP) during the current rainfall season. The AAP represents a shift toward preventative humanitarian action in the region.
History in the making! 🇸🇴 The first-ever #Somalia National Dialogue Platform on #AnticipatoryAction is underway in Mogadishu. Hosted by @SoDMA_Somalia & supported by ICPAC @WFP, @FAO, @IFRC, @DRC_ngo & other partners, this is about choosing #EarlyAction over late reaction. We are also entirely grateful to @eu_echo and @GermanyDiplo for supporting this initiative. #Resilience #DRR #Somalia #ClimateAction #EarlyWarningsForAll

📸 Earlier today at the #IGADMediaAwards2025 – Voices for Climate Action Panel Series, we had a lively conversation on Youth, Media, and Climate Action, focusing on how we communicate early warning information across the IGAD region.
Featuring seasoned environmental journalists, a Disaster Risk Management expert, academia, and a youth climate champion, the discussion explored a wide range of themes, including ICPAC’s early warning and climate services, the crucial link between science, media, and academia, impactful storytelling that inspires action and more.

🌋Ethiopia's Hayli Gubbi volcano erupted on 23 November for the first time in 12,000 years, sending ash plumes 3,000m high. Ash clouds have traveled across the Red Sea to Yemen, Oman, Pakistan & India, disrupting aviation. This rare geological event offers scientists valuable insights into Earth's volcanic systems while highlighting the need for enhanced early warning mechanisms. IGAD monitoring the situation closely. #VolcanicEruption #HornOfAfrica
ℹ️ Strengthening Sudan’s 🇸🇩 capacity to operationalize drought early warning alerts: This week at ICPAC, through the DRESS-EA project, we are training @EWSMA1 staff in #drought analysis and multi-sectoral bulletin production to help communities make informed decisions. #EarlyWarning #EADW
ℹ️ This week, @SoDMA_Somalia issued a nationwide drought emergency advisory after consecutive failed rainy seasons and forecasts of below-average rainfall for the October–December Deyr season. The drought is most severe in the eastern and northern regions but is spreading to central and southern Somalia. The advisory highlights the urgent need for coordinated action to address the escalating crisis.
