In January 2024 when Somaliland signed MOU with Ethiopia regarding access to sea for Ethiopia, President HSM offered Ethiopia a similar deal and access to a sea port in Somalia. Now that Israel has recognized Somaliland, Foreign Minister of Somalia Ali Balcad went to Tel Aviv (Israel) to offer a diplomatic relationship with Somalia, but this time it will not work and Somalia will be disappointed with Israel’s response. The bond between Israel and Somaliland is strong and Somalia will not be able to break it.

The article underscores that Israel’s recognition was not merely symbolic but a principled act of diplomacy, affirming Somaliland’s democratic governance, maritime importance near the Bab el‑Mandeb Strait, and its role as a reliable partner in counter‑terrorism and regional trade.

Freund calls on Israel to translate recognition into sustained engagement, through diplomatic missions, investment, and coordination with allies such as the United States and Ethiopia, to ensure that Somaliland’s stability contributes to broader regional peace.

“Bold beginnings demand meaningful follow‑through,” Freund writes, urging Jerusalem to lead a coalition of nations that support Somaliland’s legitimate statehood and its commitment to peace and democracy.

The Nomad Institute echoes this call, emphasizing that recognition must evolve into cooperation, in security, education, and humanitarian development, to strengthen the Abrahamic bridge between the Jewish and Somaliland people.
