@feelthebyrn1 We've observed acute and substantially declines in lactate clearance capacity during respiratory illnesses. Usually see this impact within a few days lasting a few weeks. Never seen clearance return to baseline spontaneously thereafter. This effect may persist for some.
@BaptistHealthSF@JonFialkowMD Fun and insightful event with fantastic hosts! Thanks for letting me chat about maintaining metabolic flexibility in aging. Lots more to learn...
The Lifestyle & Longevity Medicine Symposium brought together physicians and experts across disciplines to explore practical, evidence-based approaches to prevention, metabolic health, precision diagnostics, and emerging longevity therapeutics.
Is there a standard of practice to monitor resting lactate levels when dosing metformin? Curious bc anyone I've tested taking metformin had a resting [La] over 2 mmol and typically did not clear with light physical activity. When metformin held I saw normal patterns in lactate levels and clearance.
Metabolic Flexibility
Metabolic Flexibility refers to how efficiently your body processes energy like carbohydrates and fats. It’s mostly based on supply and demand, what’s available and what you’re doing or (or not doing). Losing flexibility (not talking about your hamstrings) is related to changes in metabolic health, typically not the good kind. It can be measured by a few methods, for example, with a mask measuring the gases you are breathing (RER) or by seeing how glucose and insulin respond over time to a sugary drink (OGTT).
OVAL measures metabolic flexibility during an exercise test by sampling lactate as the test increases in intensity. From the test results, we describe your status of your metabolic flexibility as the MetFlex Index, offering direct insight into your metabolic operating system.

In her NYT article, “What Is ‘Metabolic Health,’ and Why Does It Matter?”, Author Nina Agrawal discusses dysfunctional metabolism and its impact on health and disease in the U.S. Often, conversations around the terms ‘metabolism’ or ‘metabolic’ are framed around nutrition, calories, weight, and obesity. As Nina mentions in her article, movement also plays a role in preventative strategies, noting the public health recommendations of 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity, alongside strength or resistance training.
General recommendations are helpful for generating awareness but aren’t necessarily successful at the individual level since each of us differs in form and function and improving our metabolic health is not a one-size-fits-all solution.
Our work at OVAL has been to create a science based, personalized movement program to reboot your metabolic operating system. Improving your body’s ability to manage stress and energy is key to restoring sustainable health. Over the next few months I will provide explanations for how OVAL measures and manages your metabolic health through movement. Stay tuned…
