My mom died yesterday. I have never known anyone with a greater capacity to love than she. I was lucky to visit with her a month ago. I spoke with her almost every day. This 'why do you care about a tiny fraction of the population?' line is, and always was, utterly ridiculous.

Gender ideology has undermined freedom of speech, scientific truth, gay rights, and women's and girls' safety, privacy and dignity. It's also caused irreparable physical damage to vulnerable kids.

Nobody voted for it, the vast majority of people disagree with it, yet it has been imposed, top down, by politicians, healthcare bodies, academia, sections of the media, celebrities and even the police. Its activists have threatened and enacted violence on those who've dared oppose it. People have been defamed and discriminated against for questioning it. Jobs have been lost and lives have been ruined, all for the crime of knowing that sex is real and matters.

When the smoke clears, it will be only too evident that this was never about a so-called vulnerable minority, notwithstanding the fact that some very vulnerable people have been harmed. The power dynamics underpinning our society have been reinforced, not dismantled. The loudest voices throughout this entire fiasco have been people insulated from consequences by their wealth and/or status. They aren't likely to find themselves locked in a prison cell with a 6'4" rapist who's decided his name's now Dolores. They don't need state-funded rape crisis centres, nor do they ever frequent high street changing rooms. They simper from talk show sofas about those nasty far-right bigots who don't want penises swinging around the girls' showers, secure in the knowledge that their private pool remains the safe place it always was.

Those who've benefited most from gender identity ideology are men, both trans-identified and not. Some have been rewarded for having a cross-dressing kink by access to all spaces previously reserved for women. Others have parlayed their delicious new victim status into an excuse to threaten, assault and harass women. Non-trans-identified leftybros have found a magnificent platform from which to display their own impeccably progressive credentials, by jeering and sneering at the needs of women and girls, all while patting themselves on the back for giving away rights that aren't theirs.

The actual victims in this mess have been women and children, especially the most vulnerable, gay people who've resisted the movement and paid a horrible price, and regular people working in environments where one misplaced pronoun could see you vilified or constructively dismissed. Do not tell me this is about a tiny minority. This movement has impacted society in disastrous ways, and if you had any sense, you'd be quietly deleting every trace of activist mantras, ad hominem attacks, false equivalence and circular arguments from your X feeds, because the day is fast approaching when you'll want to pretend you always saw through the craziness and never believed it for a second.

Dr. Prasad hits on some of the worst CDC actions during Covid.

CDC lied about childhood Covid harms in many ways, which kept schools closed far too long in much of the country. But perhaps the most egregious was declaring Covid a "top 5 killer of children" based on a flawed pre-print from the UK when their own data showed it wasn't true. They used this false claim to get approval for pediatric vaccines and to push it to American parents, with Walensky repeating the lie after CDC was aware I had debunked it.

CDC decided absolutely everyone should mask in public at all times, and only made an exception for kids under 2 because they realized it would be a suffocation hazard. They spent the pandemic publishing biased mask study after biased mask study as propaganda to promote this failed intervention.

CDC repeatedly downplayed myocarditis risks in young men, even though they had data showing the increased risks early on, and Walensky lied and said there was no signal in May 2021. They didn't even encourage spacing out doses for young men. Then the federal govt doubled down on mandates for college students, the military, and many other young people, including annual boosters.

The agency has never even tried to provide any sort of defense for these terrible decisions or offered any apology for the harm they caused. It's beyond time for the agency to address some of these obvious failures.

It took Chris Cuomo joining Newsmax for people to forget the tremendous amount of propaganda he pushed on CNN during Covid.

It took Whitney Cummings 60 seconds on CNN New Years Eve for people to forget she pushed vaccinated/mask-only shows.

It took Mark Zuckerberg five minutes on social media for people to forget he censored life saving information during covid and interfered with a US election.

It promoted a kind of nihilism over human relationships and institutionalized amnesia about basic points of etiquette. In fact, public outrage is toothless too.

You can keep telling yourself this, but you're simply wrong. I'm a left-leaning liberal who's fiercely anti-authoritarian, and if you couldn't deduce that from my work you haven't understood a word of it.

I'm not an ideologue. I mistrust ideologies. I've never met an ideologue who wasn't prepared to deny a bit of inconvenient truth to keep their world view intact and I include ideologies with which I find myself in broad sympathy. On the other hand, I am an idealist. I believe in human beings. We are undeniably capable of terrible acts, but the evidence is that we are astoundingly collaborative and mutually supportive, especially when times are hard.

My values haven't changed; what's changed is the political landscape. What was once my natural home (a pragmatic centre-left party focused on dealing with economic disparity, championing social liberalism and equal rights) is now dominated by an illiberal, identity-based strain of politics I consider elitist, harmful and out of touch with the day-to-day concerns of regular people, particularly women (and I've still lived more than half of my life as a non-wealthy woman, and some of that time was spent in poverty).

There are women with whom I make common cause in the TERF wars I disagree with on other things. Within obvious limits (sucking up to literal Nazis) I don't particularly care about their personal politics. The reality is that there's currently an assault on women's rights unparalleled in my lifetime, and it's coming from both left and right. If ever there was a time for women across the political spectrum to come together, it is now.

By the old left/right metrics (which I accept have been massively disrupted) I am left wing. Not hard left, but definitely left of centre. However, I believe the left in the West has taken a dangerous and self-defeating turn, embracing a form of identity politics that is fundamentally destructive to values the left once respected, especially freedom of speech and fundamental liberalism.

I'm not a tribal person, so I haven't embraced those positions because 'my team' has decreed that's what we're doing now. Yes, I've received a lot of blowback from the left for not meekly accepting the new ethos. But principles aren't dictated by other people's approval. I was never in this to feel part of a team (one of the undersung benefits of being a true introvert). So I won't be running to embrace a new team to feel good about myself, because that would be just as insincere as pretending to believe in the identity stuff to keep myself in with the left.
