Coldplay's Chris Martin breathes better than you do!
"I've worked with singers. And if they have their mouths open during sleep, it's trauma to the upper airways, which house the vocal cords."

Great to have Patrick McKeown and The Oxygen Advantage mentioned in @washingtonpost this weekend. More athletes are using this technique to increase their performance in their field. From Tennis to UFC: nasal breathing and mouth-taping to improve athletic performance!
By bringing attention to your breathing many times during the day, you will get a much greater insight into your breathing than if you set aside time for breathing exercises. Instead of expecting a cure-all practise, you'll give your brain many breaks to help you get refocused.
Bring breath awareness into your everyday life. As you walk to the shops or to work, in a meeting, at your desk. Even during conversation, you can listen with 80% of your attention and keep 20% of your attention on your breath. #oxygenadvantage
One thing we can easily miss is that breath awareness is not limited to formal practise. You don't have to be sitting on a yoga mat or doing breathing exercises to notice how you breathe. It's actually better to bring your attention to your breath many times each day.
Nasal breathing must be comfortable during exercise. Having a higher Bolt score and wearing a nasal dilator helps. There are times that one needs to open the mouth especially during higher intensity exercise.
Exercise with nasal breathing adds an extra load to breathing and trains the body to do more with less ventilation. Benefits include less breathlessness, more efficient use of oxygen, improved oxygen delivery to the working muscles and protection
The Oxygen Advantage can help muscular recovery in 3 ways:
1. Breathing is more efficient for better body oxygenation.
2. Breath holding reduces muscle soreness after workouts, and
3. Paced breathing means better heart rate variability and improved recovery after your workout.
It is normal to have sore muscles after your workout. Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is a sign your muscles are building. You can use breathing exercises to help the process of recovery - post-sprint, post-match, and during half time. #oxygenadvantage
Say "YES" to NO (Nitric Oxide)
Breathing through your nose draws in NO into your lungs. NO is released in the sinuses around your nasal cavity. It helps keep the blood vessels open, which means more blood can get to the organs, muscles, and brain.

Mouth breathing is a bad habit.
Unless you replace your bad breathing habits with healthy nose breathing, you are standing in the way of your own potential.
So... are you ready to succeed?

When it comes to running, nose breathing optimizes blood flow and oxygen delivery to your working muscles. It protects the airways from drying and cooling. And it helps engage the diaphragm for optimal movement.

- Exhale for 4 secs
- Hold your breath for 4 secs
- Repeat for 2-4 mins
Breathing exercises and body/mind awareness are helpful for stress management on a day-to-day basis. They're ideal for dealing with exercise performance, stage fright, and the pressure involved with competitive professions. #oxygenadvantage
