On behalf of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, I am grateful to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for their new funding of $500 million over five years, to help #EndPolio and improve health systems to protect children from other life-threatening diseases.
We are on the cusp of making history, and this funding will get us even closer.
To ensure quick diagnosis and early treatment, WHO recommends the use of rapid molecular #tuberculosis (TB) tests as the initial diagnostic test for all persons with signs and symptoms of TB https://t.co/0jbErIdMy6

While many African countries have made significant strides against neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), the region🌍 still bears 39% of the global NTD burden.
@WHOAFRO’s Dr Elizabeth Juma calls for action to eliminate NTDs. ⬇️
Recent poliovirus detections in Europe are a wake-up call: #polio is still a threat and vaccination is still vital to prevent outbreaks.
Europe has been polio-free since 2002, but in just 4 months, poliovirus was found in wastewater systems from 14 cities in 5 countries - proving the risk remains.

.@WHO expresses deep concern about the implications of the United States government’s immediate funding pause for #HIV programmes in low- and middle-income countries. These programmes provide access to life-saving HIV therapy to more than 30 million people worldwide.
This funding halt can put people living with HIV at immediate increased risk of illness and death and undermine efforts to prevent transmission in communities and countries.
Such measures, if prolonged, could lead to rises in new infections and deaths, reversing decades of progress and potentially taking the world back to the 1980s and 1990s when millions died of HIV every year globally, including many in the USA.
We call on the US government to enable additional exemptions to ensure the delivery of lifesaving HIV treatment and care: https://t.co/Ljq8foAoxz
"@WHO regrets the announcement that the US intends to withdraw from the Organization.
WHO plays a crucial role in protecting the health & security of the world’s people, including Americans.
We hope the US will reconsider & look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue."
WHO comments on United States announcement of intent to withdraw
Geneva – The World Health Organization regrets the announcement that the United States of America intends to withdraw from the Organization.
WHO plays a crucial role in protecting the health and security of the world’s people, including Americans, by addressing the root causes of disease, building stronger health systems, and detecting, preventing and responding to health emergencies, including disease outbreaks, often in dangerous places where others cannot go.
The United States was a founding member of WHO in 1948 and has participated in shaping and governing WHO’s work ever since, alongside 193 other Member States, including through its active participation in the World Health Assembly and Executive Board. For over seven decades, WHO and the USA have saved countless lives and protected Americans and all people from health threats. Together, we ended smallpox, and together we have brought polio to the brink of eradication. American institutions have contributed to and benefited from membership in WHO.
With the participation of the United States and other Member States, WHO has over the past 7 years implemented the largest set of reforms in its history, to transform our accountability, cost-effectiveness, and impact in countries. This work continues.
We hope the United States will reconsider and we look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue to maintain the partnership between the USA and WHO, for the benefit of the health and well-being of millions of people around the globe.
World Humanitarian Day is a stark reminder of how fragile humanitarian work is. We stand with all humanitarian workers, civilians and communities affected by injustice and power imbalance and call on all actors to respect humanitarian laws. #Actforhumanity
We have the tools to eliminate #CervicalCancer.
But still, 350,000 women continue to die from the disease every year.
I urge leaders to commit to eliminating cervical cancer and ensuring women’s and girls' right to dignified, quality care.
I thank the governments of Colombia and Spain for organizing the first International Forum on Global Cervical Cancer Elimination Initiative. My thanks as well to key partners on this life-saving journey.
With support from @WHO and partners, #CAR🇨🇫 has launched a polio vaccination campaign targeting more than 1.6 million children under 5 years old using the novel oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2) 💉.
