@Llib7 NB. In Victoria we have a generic death by guns/knives/machetes/mushroom et al category.... and death caused by a driver. Per 100,000 rates for 2025/26 are 0.7 for murder, 1.6 for driving. The fearmongering is not exactly proportional to the stats.

@Boenau But $400 is for 40mph over the limit. Doing 40 in a 25 zone only gets you a $40 fine… and the scale only starts at 10mph over.

Previous attempts to regularly commte by bike after having one written off by a car have all started on National #Ride2Day. No putting it off... under-prepared, too bad. A slow ride from the leafy burbs to the city. Always greet crossing supervisors, they help cyclists.

Johnston St hasn't changed much in 40 years. The painted bike lanes probably make it less safe. 2/3 of passes were less than 1m in the last passing distance study I participated in. Occupy the traffic lane and that drops to ~1/10. #Ride2Work

An early version of a tramstop with a raised platform for accessibility. The designed bike path reduces visibility at the preceding intersection increasing the risk of being T-boned. At the end you just have to watch the driveway on the left and cars on the right.

6 lane highways have there pros. you can occupy a lane and there's plenty of other lanes for people to pass. Fewer close passes than quieter streets. But the cars do have a habit of getting in the way. The Toyota ute at 7s is still behind me at the end. #Ride2Work

The placement of buttons at road crossings leaves bikes blocking the footpath. Only Blackburn station provides a route under the road. With no useful connections through Box Hill I get onto Maroondah Hwy from Rooks Rd and then it's a straight line to the city. #Ride2Work

The Ringwood - Box Hill is the quickest way to get to Blackburn but then it's back streets to Laburnum and then a footpath with painted markings to make it legal for adults to ride on. I Jump on the road around most stations to avoid pedestrians at station entrances. #Ride2Work

New 2 way bike path under construction on Bedford Rd. Not sure how we're supposed to get to it other than stop and walk at the lights which is also a school crossing. Just gonna have to occupy the lane for now. Avoiding pedestrians to get onto the trail. #Ride2Work

@MikeyCycling I’ve seen police do the occasional “sting” operation by bike here. Too easy in peak hour because the streets are so clogged.

@MrRexPatrick If you're looking for a spot to chill I can recommend watching the sun go down at the top of Flat Rock looking across the Taipan Wall. Short walk from the carpark, easy enough to walk back in the dark.
