Glacier, Avalanche aur Flash Flood Se Suraksha Abhiyan:
I am sure we have unlimited research on glaciers, avalanches and flash floods in India. Can it all be put together into one consice document for netas who call the shots in Delhi, bureaucrats, policy planners, builders, scientists, experts, researchers, state govts, media and all others who can benefit from this one guiding document. We know when glaciers tumble, they bring massive downstream destruction. Along with glacial outbursts, avalanches and flash floods are mediums of mass downstream destruction. While there is frankly not much that govts and humans can do with glaciers other than monitoring and early warning systems, what is more in your control is to manage and minimise the mass of development and construction along rivers and floodplains. This is what makes the catastrophe far more vulnerable as we are now sadly witnessing unfolding in Nepal. Net net, downstream floodplain risks need to be mapped and minimised if they cannot be eliminated. Finally, dont try to tame the Himalayas or take them for granted for your master plans and projects. It's risky and not wise, to say the least!
This woman slapped him at the club, thinking nothing would happen. Instead of reacting with violence, he had her arrested. That’s exactly how you handle it.
A devastating flash flood has struck Nepal’s Rasuwa district near the Nepal–Tibet border; causing deaths, destruction and widespread damage to roads, bridges and infrastructure. The flood has affected the Bhote Koshi–Trishuli river system with rescue and relief operations underway. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Nepal and all those affected by this tragedy.
For our state of Uttarakhand and other Himalayan states, this is a stark reminder of the growing risks in fragile mountain regions. We must do what we don't do properly and adequately today which is to strengthen early-warning systems, disaster preparedness and coordination between communities and agencies.
It's also good to state the obvious that disasters do not recognise state boundaries nor national borders. The Himalayas are an ecological and geological system and what happens in one part can have consequences far downstream. Nepal’s tragedy is one more lesson for Uttarakhand and all other states in the Indian Himalayan Region.
My heartfelt condolences once again!

Very well said, Kumaon Jagran. You are doing a great job raising genuine people concerns in #Uttarakhand. Keep up the good work. And ofcourse, I join our young students & add my voice to their genuine & basic demand for a simple, functional road for their village.
46,203 Hectares Forest Diverted in #Uttarakhand, 47% in #Dehradun district alone:
On #Harela, I'm reflecting on where Uttarakhand stands today. Through an RTI I filed, I found that 46,203 hectares of forest land have been diverted for development projects since the state's formation in 2000. What worries me most is that 47% of this diversion has taken place in #Dehradun district alone, a district that is just 6% of the totals state's area.
Ironically, as we celebrate Harela, thousands of trees continue to be felled for the Rishikesh–Bhaniyawala highway. I'm deeply concerned that this has become the symbol of a development model that is pushing our fragile Himalayan ecosystems beyond their limits. The question for us all is that is this really the future we want?
It's obvious that Uttarakhand urgently needs climate resilient, ecologically responsible development, carrying capacity based planning, strict compliance with environmental laws, protection of natural forests and complete transparency on compensatory afforestation. I am sure that you will agree with me that Harela should be a day not only to plant trees, but also to protect the forests we still have.
If you are keen to know more, you may have a look at the enclosed RTI reply and the one page analysis with data and percentages.

The ground reality: our community doesn't take this issue seriously enough.
We need a dedicated support group. People who are struggling need a safe, direct space to connect and find help. Let's create that community.
