Husband of Lanita, father of Levi & Josiah. Minister at Newnan church of Christ. Loves preaching, mowing yards & being a flight attendant--but not all at once!
@chrisaltrock Sometimes those "deletes," at least for this Sunday, are good to keep for another Sunday somewhere down the road. At least that's my experience. (Of course, some just deserve to be "trashed" altogether 🙃.)
I was a young preacher. Marvin Phillips was preaching nearby. Early one morning, I ran with him. Eventually, he asked what I was reading. I had been reading something very negative/critical of other ministers. --"Be careful about what you put into your mind." Still very true.
I’m gonna put this right here: I’m not a fan of immodesty. What I am is simply completely creeped out by hyper fundamentalist dudes objectifying women and telling women in detail how not to dress in pictures so that we unrighteous crudes don’t make these righteous dudes stumble.
Pastors, let's remember that we're not called to win people by our personalities or our programs but to preach Christ and him crucified and to serve God's flock with his appointed ordinary means of grace, not with our own devised tactics, so that God gets the glory, not us.
What the Spirit of God does through us is second to what God has done for us through the cross of Christ. Our redemption doesn't come from God working through us but Jesus dying for us.
However God has gifted you, it's not really your gift. It's His to you and through you to be used for His glory and the benefit of others. It doesn't say anything about how good you are but how good He is.
As Afghanistan gets pushed more and more to the back of the news cycle line and other topics take front and center (never takes long anymore), I encourage you to keep Afghans in your prayers, especially those who want to leave or have left already.
I've been around church and hoops my whole life (I'm 42). Religion and sports bring out the BEST and the WORST in people. Why? Because they are mirrors -- church and sports reveal who we are and we can't hide. Today you get to choose which one will be true --the best or worst!
In the shadow of my hurt, forgiveness feels like a decision to reward my enemy.
But in the shadow of the cross, forgiveness is merely a gift from one undeserving soul to another.
