يبدأ كل إصلاح بسؤال: من نريد أن نكون؟ مجتمع يحمي شعبه، أم مجتمع يتخلى عنهم؟ الآن هو وقت الاختيار.
Every reform starts with a question: Who do we want to be? A society that protects its people — or one that abandons them? The time to choose is now.
What if every frontline social worker had the tools to do their job well? Better training, more support, less burnout. It starts with us demanding change.
Social support isn’t a job for the government alone. Communities, NGOs, and local groups all have a role. But right now? The law doesn’t reflect this shared duty.
Privacy matters. No one should be forced to trade their dignity for help. Yet, today, no law stops filming or exposing aid recipients in Kurdistan and Iraq. Should we accept this?
Did you know? There’s no law in KRI or Iraq guaranteeing equal access to aid for all. Discrimination stays hidden in the shadows. It’s time to bring it to light.
Iraq’s social protection law is older than ISIS. Since then? War, climate change, COVID-19. Our people’s needs have changed. Our laws haven’t. Isn’t it time?
Aid in Kurdistan Region often depends on politics. One day you get help, the next it disappears. We need laws that protect, not systems that gamble with people’s lives.
Rural youth. Elderly people. Women-led families. People with disabilities. Internally displaced families. These are not statistics — they’re our neighbours. They deserve reliable support, not empty promises.
Social assistance isn’t charity. It’s a pillar of dignity and stability. In the Kurdistan Region, too many people still face obstacles to get the support they need. How do we fix this?
📍This BASIC Research webinar will examine shifts and emerging trends in the accountability of social assistance during crises. A recent global review from the Better Assistance in Crises (BASIC) Research programme addresses three critical accountability issues: disconnected, technocratic mechanisms; limited participation and trust between communities and aid providers; and conflicting accountability priorities.
A panel of experts drawn from research, international and country level civil society organizations and NGOs will discuss how power dynamics, stakeholder participation and trust influence accountability, reviewing challenges in feedback mechanisms, donor approaches and the risk of aid diversion, and proposing promising ways forward.

Speda TV's coverage of Pasewan's BASIC Research project on Social Protection in KRI and Iraq.
As part of the BASIC Research, we welcomed 22 local NGOs to our inaugural workshop focused on evaluating our report on social protection legislation reform in Iraq and KRI. The aim was simple: gather honest, grounded feedback from those with firsthand experience in the field.
