In collaboration with @NairobiWater @047County Local Administration and Viwandani community, @AkibaMTrust  excited to highlight the progress of the Water & Sewer Extension Project in Mukuru Viwandani a 1.5KM sewer line extension that is transforming sanitation and water access for residents.

Villages covered:
Lungalunga Donholm
Lungalunga Center
Milimani

Alongside the sewer works, 5 Prepaid Water Dispensers (PPDs) are under construction across these three villages. The PPDs will ensure that households have:
· Affordable and reliable access to clean water
· A safe and transparent water system (pay only for what you use)
· Reduced reliance on unsafe water sources

Impact for the community:
· Improved sanitation and drainage
· Reduced cases of waterborne diseases
· Better health and dignity for families
· Greater community resilience against flooding and pollution

This project is more than just pipes and water dispensers it’s about investing in people, restoring dignity, and building a healthier Mukuru Viwandani for generations to come.

Community Voices at the Heart of Change.

Community voices are at the center of reshaping riparian spaces, and our recent consultations in Kayaba provided a powerful platform for dialogue, co-creation, and shared visioning.

Residents came together with the AMT team to openly discuss the challenges facing the Ngong River corridor from flooding, erosion, and pollution to land use and accessibility. What stood out most was the wealth of local knowledge and practical solutions that community members shared.

These sessions were more than just feedback they were about inclusivity, collective ownership, and ensuring that the transformation of riparian land reflects the needs and aspirations of the community itself.

The photos capture moments of engagement, exchange, and collective responsibility, showcasing the spirit of partnership that will guide the regeneration of Kayaba’s river edge into a safer, greener, and more resilient public space.

Together, we are building not just spaces, but a future rooted in community, resilience, and sustainability.

We’re proud to have contributed to both the development of the plan and the model, helping bring community priorities and spatial data to life in a tangible, visionary form.

In addition to the plan, our booth features highlights from some of our other programs and projects in water and sanitation, riparian planning, school feeding, and community research all rooted in participatory planning and aimed at making cities more inclusive, resilient, and just.

We are excited to share that the Draft People’s Adaptation – Local Physical and Land Use Development Plan for Homa Bay Municipality (2025–2035) has officially been published for public notice.

📰 As of 13th August 2025, a notice of completion has been published in accordance with Section 49(1) of the Physical and Land Use Planning Act, 2019, marking the beginning of the statutory 60-day period for public representation and feedback.

Phase 3 of the Mathare Land Research!

Today, we begin the last phase of the ongoing land research in Mathare following successful training of the community researchers. Phase 3 focuses on Mabatini Ward, which comprises six villages: Mathare 3A, Mathare 3C, Mashimoni, Mashimoni No. 10, Mabatini, and Kwa Kariuki.

The 1st round will be on mapping and numbering of structures across the area, followed by a structure-level survey tool. This tool will explore:

1. Pathways to land access
2. De-facto land rights
3. Perceptions of tenure security
4. Experiences of land conflict and access to justice

Building on the insights from previous phases, we continue to deepen our understanding mechanisms of land access in dense urban informal settlements like Mathare.
