Those I most want to be with in eternity are gathered in this photograph, except for one remarkable woman who is missing—my wife, Pat. She created this family. She gave these children (and by extension the grandchildren and great-grandchildren) physical life and spiritual strength. She nurtured them in a knowledge of their Heavenly Father and their Savior Jesus Christ, teaching them to love and lean on and long for Them.
No Church calling, no professional accomplishment, no personal achievement was more important to her than the firm faith of each member of this family. In short, she gave everything for this family. She was like Mary of old, who alone knew who her Son was and why she had to provide home and happiness for Him during His young life.
To mothers everywhere who sacrifice for their family, I wish to say in this Christmas season that your sacrifice is not unnoticed—not by the leaders of the Church and not by our Father in Heaven who seeks always the care of His children.
When this earthly chapter of our lives is over and all of the honors of the world have faded away, I believe it may well be righteous mothers who first hear the words, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant: … enter into [my rest]” (Matthew 25:21).

A message from the First Presidency:
We are devastated by the recent eruption of violence and loss of life in the Middle East. Violence of this nature is abhorrent to us and is not in harmony with the gospel of Jesus Christ, which is a gospel of peace. At such times, our hearts ache for all victims of this atrocity.
As servants of God, we affirm that He calls upon all of us to love our neighbors as ourselves, and we pray for a peaceful resolution of all conflicts.
Most of you will know that my wife Pat passed away last July with complications from Covid and other respiratory problems. I am brokenhearted and lonely, but that is the price we pay for love in the world. I look forward to rejoining her.
But the wonder of life goes on, including for these two great-grandchildren who, with our other family members, were the delight of Pat's life. Her passing and their arrival are a reminder that both birth and death are a part of the Savior’s plan of happiness. I dearly, deeply miss Pat, but I am grateful for a new generation in our family. This is why we speak of family so much in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for, as President Russell M. Nelson has said, salvation is an individual experience, but exaltation is a family experience.
I bear witness of the beauty of this plan and that all is well if we live for its promises. I am trying to live worthily of those promises and the trust that those living on Pat's side of the veil have in those of us who have access to the temple where so many of those promises are revealed.
The Manhattan New York Temple will close for renovations in 2024. The meetinghouse on the third floor of the temple will also be upgraded. These renovations are expected to be completed in approximately three years.
