On Memorial Day, we pay tribute to the brave men and women in uniform who gave their lives for this country that we love. It is a debt we can never fully repay, but we must never stop trying. I’ll always be grateful to our fallen heroes and their families, whose sacrifice reminds us of what it means to live for something greater than ourselves.
On this day in 1923, Walt Disney Animation Studios was founded. The Library's collections contain lots of Disney-related treasures, including some representing the birth of Mickey Mouse: Six storyboards for the first Mickey cartoon ever produced. https://t.co/avBd3901kS
Thank you to the brilliant, talented cast of Broadway’s @hadestown.
It was one of the most powerful performances I witnessed on the @librarycongress stage.
Thank you to creator Anaïs Mitchell for donating items from the musical to the Library’s performing arts collection. 🧵
2023 has been a pretty fab year for YA horror, so if you're currently deciding on your halloween tbr, I've put together a little list of titles I've loved (or can't wait to read). 👻 https://t.co/detW5KJdjk
Union workers at @halfpricebooks have been trying to get fair wages for a year and a half and are facing some really ridiculous pushback from the company! Booksellers are vital, especially in our current age of book banning, and I'm proud to share my support of them 💪
The thing I keep coming back to is that: I understand if a librarian needs to separate out certain books because displaying them will put them in danger. I really, really do. But I fundamentally don't think that is a call the publisher should be making for them.
I've been sitting with the news that Scholastic is self-censoring their Book Fairs since Tuesday. On Thursday I was invited to speak at a Scholastic Graphix party, and this is what I said. It's an earnest plea for the company with whom I have made so many books to do better.
Without the staff there would be No Access to millions of historical documents, maps, books and manuscripts. We call on The Newberry Library to live up to its image and start paying employees fair, family-sustaining wages. Part of @afscme31, @afscme, @cwuafscme#newberrylibrary
Here's @HerndonMiddle's top 8 books circulated this year. It's safe to say our students are big fans of Raina Telgemeier, @wimpykid, & @JerryCraft!
"A student checked out 300 books the previous year & was proud to be the #1 user of the library. When state restrictions meant that the librarian could no longer order manga, this student quickly ran out of material. After a few weeks, he stopped coming to the library."
I have unironically used "Here Comes A Thought" in a professional setting to describe how kids and teens can practice mindfulness. It's a useful shorthand!
